Check Engine Soon light on a 95z28

Service Engine Soon light on a 95z28
I have a 95 z28 A4 that had a blown head gasket. Was able to get a re-manufactured LT1 short block w/cast iron heads and did the swap over the past few weekends. Car starts up and seems to run ok but the Service Engine Soon light stays on after starting, and the fans kick on after about 20 seconds of idling. Because it is a 95 with an OBD-II connector with an OBD-I system I am having trouble with getting codes. I borrowed a buddies GM code reader that he uses for his 93 but the jumper picture on Rob's Shoebox site shows an OBD-1 scanner cable. So after realizing that wont work I went to a large nationwide chain to see if they could get me the DTC's, which I have done in the past with success, and they said there is no link, meaning the computer is not communicating with the scanner. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the 93 "code reader" the type that shorts the ALDL pins? If so, that won't work. There is a very basic, older model Auto Xray scanner (not just a "code reader") that will work with the setup shown on Shoebox's photo.
Or, look at free scanning software from TTS DataMaster or FreeScan.

Thanks Fred for taking the time to reply and for the links. I can't believe this 95 is so difficult to get the dtc's from. At least I find $85.00 difficult after doing this engine swap. It is still hard to figure out which cable I need. I have an OBD-I pcm with a OBD-II connector. Do I order the interface with the OBD-II connector?

I got my cable from Andrew at AKM on Monday after ordering it on Friday and it works great. But Sunday I had a buddy come by with an AutoXray 5000 and was able to scan the engine, and found out my Map Sensor was bad. So now the engine is running great but during my test drive it now seems the transmission is trying to do a 1-3 shift and slipping during the 3-4 shift. But that is probably for another post in another forum. Anyways I was able to run a scan with my new cable and Freescan last night. Being that I have almost no idea what all the information I was able to record, I have a lot of reading and learning to do. Again, Thanks Fred and Rob for all your help.
