calculated air consumption?

I have been helping out and watching some tuners at the local dyno. I was wondering if there is a way for us to create an input to freescan or datamaster for monitoring the dynamic air consumption or calculated air consumption. The guys with HPTuners use it alot while dialing in either the VE tables or the MAF tables and I would like to have the option to experiment with it on the OBD1.
If there is not a way to program it into freescan or datamaster, how would one go about calculating it by hand? I could write up something in matlab if I could verify a correct formula.
