Thumbs down B.S. Gains

I have a friend that just bought a 2002 VW Gti 337 and he said this 4 companies make a chip for $2400 that has gains of 40HP and 70 ft-lbs. or torque. This sounds ridiculously high, for any car, even one with a Turbo. He also said the guy told him he didn't need to tune the chip. I keep trying to tell him that you need to tune the chip, especially when you mod it, but he won't listen. Which one of us is right? Have you ever heard of an ECU that gains 40HP and 70 ft-lbs on the dyno?

Ask him the name of the four companies that make the chip and then give them a call. $2400 for 40 horses sounds about right(although a shot of nitrous could be had for a LOT less). Don't quite know about the 70 ft-lbs of tq though. But I've been wrong lots of times.

this engine puts out 180 h.p. stock? and they do this without affecting a boost increase or wastegate/mod, just electronic tuning? interesting if that is the case.

$2400 for a chip? yikes. anyway, on a turbo vehicle.. if you can add boost with the PCM, a chip could easily add that kind of power

That is just like the Subaru Impreza's, about $1500-2500 for the chip.

That is a chip with a builtin Eaton blower.
