Any experience with EPROMER or the ROMulator

Looking for feedback from those of you who have used or know anything about these two products. My car (well....the drivetrain) is a 93 Z28 which tells me I need a chip burning setup. I'm currently running a program from MustGoFaster but Dave is no longer doing this on his own and upgrade costs do not compute anymore.

EPROMER(5) - This appears to be your basic EPROM burner. Any existing issues getting it to work with the 93s? I would be using TunerCat to get the editing done and this to burn the chip. Below is a link to the site with all of their info. Please suggest any better products a.k.a. Pocket Programmer from Xtronics???

Xtronics ROMulator - This looks really cool as it seems as though it would give me the ability to program directly in the car without removing the chip...burning...replacing the chip. Also appears to do away with the need for a UV eraser. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

I've had the epromer 5 and sold it within a week of getting it. Customer support sucks and I didn't like the product, although it will work with the chips you need.

I'd recommend getting the xtronics pocket programmer instead. I have a much more advanced programmer now, but I used to have the pocket programmer and I really liked the way it works, plus I've heard the customer support is great too.

Thanks madwolf...Would you mind elaborating a little on the "more advanced" programmer and what it may offer that the Pocket Programmer does not. I was under the impression that the programmer was simply a vehicle to get the program on the chip. I only want to make one purchase and if the upgrade price isn't too bad I may go with it.

I'm really looking for feedback on the ROMulator. Sounds really trick but I can't find anyone that's tried it or made it work for that matter.

There are a couple of guys that are using a romulator in Buicks.
But there are so few guys doing it with LT1's it's hard to get much info at all. Might try the third gen guys. I'm sure there has to be more people using one.

I own and use both the Pocket Programmer 2 and the Romulator. The PP2 is more than adequate for programming proms for GM cars and trucks. The programmer you mentioned above is a very simple generic device and I have heard that there customer support is lousy.

Intronics does have very good support for their products. Plus one of the guys there is a car nut as well. As for the Romulator, you can't use that device alone to program proms. It is used to connect to the PCM where a prom image is loaded into it, then the car or truck is running from the Romulator with the image stored in its ROM memory.

The Romulator (with my laptop connected) then allows me to make online edits to the image via TunerCat, when I make a table change say to the timing map I send that change directly to the Romulator, then I watch my scan tool to see if there is an improvement with the change I made.

Once I am happy with the calibration, I save the file and later using the PP2 I program a Prom with my new calibration, install the prom and my customer is happy and my pocket has a few more pennies in it hopefully.

Right on brother Just the info I was hoping to find.

I already have TunerCat so I'll go ahead and order the PP2 to get me started. Soon after I know I'm going to have to have a romulator just for the awesome benefit it will give me of real time tuning.

My original thought was that I could get the Romulator and not have to buy a UV eraser which may keep the cost down but I get the idea that I won't want to leave the Romulator in my car all the time.

Any direction for me on which UV eraser to go with and where to purchase?

Thanks, Rick

Well, if you buy a Atmel 29C256 Flash memory chip and a chip carrier adapter from me you won't have to purchase that UV eraser! Using the forementioned EEPROM you can just plug it into your PP2 erase it in about 5 seconds or less, the load in your new program in about 30 seconds!

Using a UV eraser takes an average of 10 minutes. If you really want a UV eraser check them out here:

www.forchip.com

Cost: $40 for the prom and adapter plus $6 shipping to your door

The EEPROM sounds like the way to go for now. I really was trying to stay away from the erasers. I know that EPROMs have a lifespan of only so many erases and programs. How about the EEPROMs?

Is the link you gave me for your website?
Can you tell me more about the adapter or direct me to information about it? I've heard some of them require you to desolder and resolder on the PCM/ECM board. I don't have any problems doing it but I'd like to pick up a spare as this is my daily driver. If no soldering is required and this is just a plug and go situation I would definitely go to the EEPROM but otherwise I may stick with the standard EPROM until I can pick up a spare PCM/ECM.

You have been a great deal of help to me and would look to you for purchase first. Thank you.

No, the link I gave you is where you can buy a UV eraser. That is where I purchased mine, its not real fancy but its cheap and works well.

I will email you a document about the adapters
