95 z28 check engine light on code read error

I have my check engine light comming on..car seems to run fine..cant feel any change..
it started on saturday.
on sunday morning It kept comming on a few minutes after starting.
sunday evening i noticed that when the light came on my cooling fanS both would be on.
temp guage on dash says it is NOT running hot.
motor doesnt seem to be overheatnig..not boil over after i shut engine off.
aldl port does have power to it
I tryed 2 differant code readers..both would say not able to connect...or code read error.

could it be a bad coolant temp sender for the computer?
why can I not get the codes to show?

what am I missing checkin?

any help would be great
thanks

What type of code reader are you trying to use? The most common cause on a 95 is trying to connect an OBD-II scanner.

While your car has a 16-pin OBD-II style ALDL connector, the PCM is an OBD-I. You need to use an OBD-I scanner, with the correct 12-pin to 16-pin adapter, or you need to jumper the wires, as Shoebox suggests:

Its normal for the fans to run full-time for many of the trouble codes, including a faulty AIR pump circuit, problems with the knock sensor, etc. It is not just limited to problems with the coolant temp sensor.

monday....cooling fans came on within 2 minutes of startup.guage temp was just starting to move..
the scanner i have is Blue-point YA3120
it has the cable for OBD1...but from the pic you guided me to i cant tell which or how many pins the wires on the cable adapter will connect to..the adapter has all 12 pins...but the pic i see some missing.

thanks again for the help

An OBD-I code reader doesn't need 12V power from the ALDL connector. If you notice, the 93 and 94 12-pin connectors do not have 12V power to any of the pins, and the jumper wires, per Shoebox's diagram, do not connect to pin 16 in the 95's ALDL connector, which is where the 12V connection is located.

Ignore the reerences in this link to "flashing the codes". I know you don't have a 93. But the diagrams do show that 93 and 94 don't have a 12V pin, and 95 while it has a 12V pin, does not need to be connected to use the scanner.

Grinns:
When you checked fuses, did you check the fuse block in the engine bay? If not, look at the one marked "Air Pump" (#7?). The air pump was a common problem (it prompted a dealer fix years ago) and it's failure would have your symptoms.

Re: 95 z28 check engine light on code read error

ill check that #7 fuse this afternoon.

what i see is....the light is off when i start the car...can take between 20seconds and almost 2 minutes for light to come on.
light will go offramdomly..sometime at easy cruize..and mostly if I am stuck at a long signal light, and as soon as i give it gas to leave the signal the service light comes back on.
car does reach opperating temp according to guage on dash ( i know thats not on the same senser at the cooling fans)

thanks for the help

I looked up the Snap On scan tool you have. It says it will do SOME '94 and '95 OBDI cars. I wonder if yours is one of the ones it won't do? You might have to find a friend with a tool that will read it.

thanks for all the advice..
yeppers.#7 fuse in the engine compartment = blown.

here is what i finally did to check the code..
after work today I borrowed the shops MODIS snap-on scanner..
using the OBD@ plug adapter..
Had to use a number K-9 adapter key for the plug.

and it came up..27....maybe 29...i ferget..
circuit fault to the secondary air system.
that was the only code...
Then i went for the #7 fuse...sure enough ..it was blown.

put a new one in...and no more service engine light.

the fuse I removed looked like it was origional..never been touched..
car has 189xxxmiles on it...ya think I should carry and extra?..lol

I would like to say THANKS to all the gave me info....much appreciated..

I build custom driveshafts professionally..so if you need help in that area...hit me up.

Grinns:
The original AIR pump was prone to internal corrosion and seizing which will blow the fuse. It only runs for a few minutes at startup. Some people reprogram the PCM and disable it, others unplug the pump. In 95, As long as a good relay is left in place, the fuse is intact and the pump unplugged AIR will not cause an SES.
