I just checked American Powerhouse and found this P/N #19212300 . This is the vented dist which you recommend. It is actually cheaper than the unvented. Does that make sense? I want to make sure I purchase the correct item. Can you confirm? ....thanks

You can't use a vented opti on a 94. This is a link for the correct opti on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELPHI-OPTISPARK-DIST-Chev-Camaro-Z28-1993-94-LT1-/230691061057?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b6423d41&vxp=mtr

Note that the 93/94 unvented unit is usually more expensive than the 95-97 vented.

The unvented units like you have in your 94 are prone to corrosion due to the ozone that forms from the high voltage discharge. Adding a vent, or installing a vented cap, emulating the later vented models can help with that problem.

Not sure where you got the impression I recommended the vented unit. As noted above, your 94 has an unvented unit, and that's all you can install unless you change a whole bunch of parts including the cam, the timing set, the timing cover and the harness, to mention a few pieces.

Does the vented unit costing less make sense.... I don't know, but I told you the unvented unit typically costs more.

How did you manage to replace those previous Opti's without the basic knowledge of what was installed and required by your 94?

Re: 94 Z again..new opti ??

ok I found this one on ebay. Guess this is what I need ?

DELPHI OPTISPARK DIST,Chevrolet Camaro Z28,1993,94,LT1
Item number:230691061057
Price:$395.00

Basically everything I know is from asking questions on this site. It has been very helpful in gaining knowledge and helping to make sure things are done correctly. The opti's I had previously replaced was done by mechanics as it was told to me it was needed. I had no ideas about codes etc. and had to rely mainly on trust. The more I learn the more I realized I made mistakes but live and learn..right?

Thanks again for your help and I'll keepasking!!

Re: 94 Z again..new opti ??

ok I received the delphi opti and will have it installed next week. Ill keep my fingers crossed that this is the problem.

Im not a mechanic but think Im fairly smart. Im trying to understand why this is the problem even tho it was diagnosed DTC 36. The car starts and runs fine until it is warmed up and then the SES light along with the cooling fans come on. It still runs fine. This ALWAYS happens and when driven a certain route the ses light will come on within a mile with each trip. This has happened probably 25 times or more. If it was the opti and thinking if it was breaking down would this sort of situation continually happen?..thanks

Re: 94 Z again..new opti ??

Thermal-induced problems occur all the time in electrical equipment. Those can be initiated by internally or externally generated heat that causes components to fail at a certain temperature, or poor electrical connections to open up at elevated temperatures. This can go either way, but is more common in elevated temps. If you think of the engine compartment as a thermally-controlled "oven", it make it easier to understand. The temperature in that "oven" rises at a fairly constant rate after the engine is started and is controlled by the engine thermostat and fans. Once the temp reached the parts breaking point, the problem is reintroduced. After the temp falls again, the symptom disappears. I have seen that happen many, many times in the 45+ years I have spent as an electrical engineer. I have even seen it happen to one Opti-spark distributor that I was testing for a member. Temperature went up ---> circuit opens ----> Opti goes dead ---> Cooled down ---> Opti works fine ----> Repeat.
