2 Probs, 1. knock sensor; 2. A/C Sequence of operation
Like you said, definitely the symptom. I'm running out of retorts for it though, the wires look great and have good continuity all the way back, the relays are new, the system works great except for when coasting/breaking/RPM's are below 1500 when the A/C is on, and then during an off-cycle from low A/C temp, it tries to come on again and just doesn't. Running low on idea's for how to kick this problem.
As with you this problem is getting more complex to me also.. I can not find any other documentation or data that points to any circuitry that would cause the clutch not to pick when the a/c relay is picked. It's starting to look like an a/c clutch ground problem. Or a intermittent bad wire /connection from the relay to the clutch past the splice that sends clutch status to the PCM (status line is OK) . A bad ground to the clutch would keep the clutch off when all the PCM signals (relay pick, a/c relay picked, and clutch status +12V) look OK. The ground circuit starts out at the stud on the front of the left head. Then has a coupe of splices (to much to type) before it gets to the clutch. You would have to unwrap pieces of the harness to follow it all the way. Alternatively, getting to the black wire as close to the compressor as possible and tying it to chassis ground would eliminate that work, assuming the ground pin in the a/c clutch connection is good. Also installation of a volt or multi meter on the clutch harness at the compressor and running the leads inside the car to monitor the failure would be my next move. If meter does not read +12 with PCM a/c pick on then you have to isolate it to +12 or a ground failure.
