you guys build my motor

Hey guys.. I have went around and around with all the swaps, all the options, all the cost factors.. I am so freakin tired of trying to find the "right" thing to do.. LT1 and LS1 swaps are going to cost too much and WAY too much hassle.. The L98 is an option I was still considering but from recent investigation I have done on it it seem that it wont be able to get the job done either.. here is what I have and what I want.. I am not a big track guy, I just like going out on the weekends and running with my buddies (street racing).. and dont worry we have a safe location to do it where the cops dont bother us too bad.. I have a 92 camaro, it has a 305 TBI and a 5 speed.. I will swap the rear to a posi when I drop whatever engine in and it will probably have 3:42 gears.. oh, also S.F.C. and drag radials too.. The only driving the car gets is 2 miles to work, and 2 miles home, 5 days a week.. otherwise I just drive it on the weekend.. my fiance has a 04 neon and thats what we drive 98% of the time.. so.. here is where you come in.. if I were to go to a local engine builder (friend of my dad) he has done two engine for us so far but I am not sure I totally trust his judgment in parts combos, he builds great engines that run great but my dads 350 just isnt all that fast.. can you guys comprise a list of parts and specs for him that I can print out and show him what I want built.. my only stipulations are these.. I cant afford aftermarket heads.. vortecs would work if you think they are good, and of course classic 160 202 are super easy to get.. 383 is good also but probably not going to be able to afford all forged internals.. cam is *almost* unlimited.. i DO NOT care about gas milage, i just want the car to at least be able to idle at a stop light without having to hold the gas pedal.. so have at it.. come up with a decent combo for this guy to build that can have me running HARD.. like LT-1 killer hard, and who knows, maybe 1/8th mile LS-1 killer.. I already know I will not be able to beat one up top though, they are wicked highway monsters.. Oh i almost forgot, carb is ok, TBI is never going to support what I want.. if you have a way to do it with TPI that is even better.. also I have to stick with short headers due to lowering springs and single 3" exhaust.. umm.. if you need any other info just ask..

Re: you guys build my motor

ChevyHiPerformance built a nice engine based on the gm goodwrench 350. The setup from article IV with vortecs sounds like it would be what you are looking to do. Here is a summary of the series:

Don't count on your T5 lasting long behind an engine like this, especially with drag radials.

Re: you guys build my motor

Thats a very good article.. thank you very much.. More than likely this will be a 4 bolt main and I am guessing that with a stock crank that may be turned 10/10.. a set of "flat top" pistons, I have no idea what kind of compression that would yeild but I am sure the buider can give me a number.. vortec heads (stock) , edelbrock rpm intake, and a holley 670 street avenger, headers, and the Xe268H-10 cam the car will make about 320 at least?? I am already aware the T-5 cant handle anything, my 305 broke one, now it has a fully rebuit unit in it that has a warranty but if it breaks ill either go T-56 or just do a built 700R4 w/stall.. also.. is the cam ok with a small hit of nitrous?? probably at the most a 100 shot, more than likey ill keep it at 75 shot though.. just want some extra "oomph" when I might need it.. I think with with that small of a shot and not using it very often I can stick with reconditioned GM rods and crank.. but should I go with a better piston and what brand?? I have heard hypeutectics are not what you want to use with nitrous.. I just need some advice on parts for him to put in it.. the engine my dad got from him is just a standard 350 he sells that he said has a "RV" cam in it.. supposed to be a good truck engine but at the track he only beat me by maybe 1.5 cars.. dads car is a 82 buick regal GN look alike.. i dont remember times, wish i kept the slips.. i ran ONE run in the extremely high 9's 1/8th mile.. all the rest were extremely low 10's.. i know he was also in the 9's..

Re: you guys build my motor

You can definitely do a street 383 stroker within budget. Here's the motor I have on spec right now:

- Trick Flow 23 degree heads 2.02/1.60/64cc ($900 assembled, you can afford them)
- Comp Cams XR294HR-10 Roller Cam Package w/ 1.5 roller rockers
- Keith Black 10.5 hyper pistons, 4.030" bore
- Eagle I-beam rods
- Eagle cast 3.75" stroke crank
- Weiand X-CELerator single plenum manifold
- Holley 750cfm Double Pumper w/ mechanical seconaries
- MSD Probillet distributor and 6AL box

You don't need forged components to run a street 383. That engine should get me in the upper 400's HP/TQ and should cost under $4000 including machine work to the 4 bolt 350 block I have.

Re: you guys build my motor

Displacement: 383 cu. in.
Carburetor: Holley 750 double pumper
Heads: GM #441 castings, 76cc chambers, 2.02/1.60 in. valves, pocket ported
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr.
Camshaft: Comp Cams 280° Magnum hydraulic, with 280/280° of duration, 230/230° of duration @ 0.050 in. lift, and 0.480/0.480 in. lift
Rockers: 1.5:1
Headers: 1 5/8 in. street
Pistons: TRW forged
Rods: 5.7
Crank: cast
Comp. Ratio: 9.3:1

MAX HP: 400 @ 5700
MAX Torque: 403 @ 4500 and 5000

you should be able to get a crank off E-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...951963639&rd=1

rods from http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...?ProductId=811

pistons is the only big tickett item. http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ProductId=1145

even if you went with a set of new heads like these it would still cost under $2500 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...951926216&rd=1

Re: you guys build my motor

You wouldn't even need to do TRW forged pistons for that setup. A set of KB hypers costs like $200 and would hold 400hp fine.

Re: you guys build my motor

fast72SS.. That looks like its exactly what I need.. cheap, and power.. great combo.. The link says the site is not responding.. I will try again later but I was wondering if you had a phone number for the shop.. also you said you bought your "parts" from them.. I am assuming you built the engine yourself then? I would be currious what EXACTLY you have because your where I wanna be, LS1 killer.. thats all I care about, Im sorry LS1 guys but im freakin sick and tired of steve (friend i go racing with) having to race all the guys I cant beat for me.. we go together, he takes whoever I cant handle.. well I want to reverse the roles.. I ordered the headers, intake, and carb so far.. just have to come up with a final answer for an engine.. also I decided the engine in fact will have a 100 shot on it.. just for when i absolutely need it.. if im loosing by a nose it will come in handy.. I agree that I may not need forged but I honestly dont know if hypers can handle the power + nitrous.. that would make me nervous.. any other cheaper pistons that would handle it?? you got hypers that are pretty cheap and forged that are pretty expensive..any middle territory??
