Re: What carb to get

what engine? how much power?
people use 750 cfm carbs for everything between 350 streetcars to 500 hp big blocks. The Demon carbs are nice from what I hear, the HP carbs are also good. Stay away from Edelbrock! I personally use an old Holley 800 DP w/ mech secs. It's prolly a bit much for under 500 hp. I will be looking at a custom carb from Proform or similiar later this year.

Re: What carb to get

if the engine is stock, i recommend a holley 600 cfm electric choke carb. it runs about 230 from summit, part number: HLY-0-1850S. thats a good stout little carb, i use it on my camaro (or one similar anyway) and it works great. but if you want some higher performance, go with demon. nothing makes better power and is more reliable. with a holley on a high performance engine youll be tuning the damn thing every weekend, and thats if you dont blow out your power valve on it, which holley is notorious for. and stay away from edelbrock. a lot of people swear by them, but ive had nothing but trouble with edelbrock carbs. hope that helps out a bit.

i had a Holley 650 on my built 327. Vaccum secondaries and an elec choke. Worked greeat for me. I jetted it to 48 and changed out the secondary springs. They also come with a "safety" so you don't blow the power valve

Re: What carb to get

I think all new Holleys come with power valve blowout protection, it's just a check ball

For outta tha box use like you want get the street avenger but a holley 4160 would be easy to tune

edit: the blowout protection kit everybody sells doesnt stop the power valve from blowing, it just makes the port opening smaller

Is a demon the same overall desing as a holly. If thats the case, shouldn't it be hands down holly since they been around longer. correct me if i am wrong

I had a Holley 750 on my 327 which I replaced with an Edelbrock 650 when it blew up. Definitely get a Holley. The Edelbrock is a big piece.

Demon makes a huge note on their website and packaging that they are not Holley carburetors. They do look similar in the casing, but the 750 Demon I have is pretty different internally from the 750 Holley I had. Sadly, I don't have the motor built yet that I plan on sticking the 750 Demon on top of, so I can't tell you how I like it in comparison to the Holley.

I don't know what you guys did to your edelbrock carbs, but they are just Carter AFB's and as such are perfectly good carbs. My only criticism of them is that they are a bit TOO tunable and unless you keep careful notes of your changes it's easy to get lost and forget where you started.

Re: What carb to get

Yes, and there is some misinformation floating around in here.

0-1850s is a manual choke carb.

There is no operational difference between a holley and a demon. All important parts interchange, and the same tuning principals apply.

The aftermarket power valve protection kits do indeed work just as the holley system does by seating a checkball if a backfire were to occur.

A street avenger carb includes some dubious "features" that may or may not be desireable. The floats can only be adjusted so far, same goes for the choke. At one time they were offering a lifetime rebuild guarantee, you'll have to check if that's still the case.

It would help if we at least knew what manifold you were going to use.

As mentioned for tunability any carburetor with metering rods is a good choice. This would be the edelbrock carbs, the identical discontinued carter afb and the qjet, which can be the worlds finest running carburetor with enough patience.
