trans swap
trans swap
Just found out i have a bunch of metal in the bottom of my trans pan. So i figure ill be changing the tranny soon. What is involved in going from the 350 to a 200r4 or a 700r4 so i can have the fourth gear. Are either one a direct bolt in or am i going to have to get a new drive shaft. Any help would be great. Its going in my 67 bird.
Re: trans swap
Trans. mount location might be a problem, but easily fixed. Yes you will need a new drive shaft and a shifter. If you go with a non lock up converter you won't need a computer or you could run the painless wiring kit from summit that allows use of 700r4 w/lock up,with out a computer.By the way,go with the 700r4 and not the 200r4.That is all I can think of for now. I just put a 700r4 in a 1973 nova for a guy and it is real simple.go for it and good luck
Re: trans swap
Well, the 2004R is a much simpler swap. Uses a TH400 crossmember and bolts right in. Same yoke, same driveshaft, better gear drops, better overdrive. And when modified can handle more power than the 700's. I had one behind an 828 rwhp big block for a year, couldn't hurt the trans. It was a fully modified version though, all the bells and whistles.
Stock the 700's are a little stronger, but in mildly modified versions they're about the same strength and price.
