Timing help please.

I have a new Summit HEI style distributor: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...=SUM%2D850001R
and I need to know what I should set my initial timeing at. I don't have a timing light that tells me total advance so if anyone knows what the base timing should be please let me know.
Also should I have the vaccum advance connected to the "part vacum" port on my edelbrock carb or the "full vacum" port?
Thanks for any advice or help.

i believe its supposed to be hooked to the part throttle and the base timing with the vaccuum line off and pluged is somewhere around 8*

Yeah, 8 is a good starting point, then you can optimize from there. My 71 runs best with 12 initial and 36 total. I prefer full time vacuum. Idles better and gets better mileage. Ported vacuum is a child of emissions. Something to do with full time elevating combustion chamber temps and raising Nox levels, I think. But try it both ways to see what works best on your combination. You aren't going to hurt anything switching it around.
