Engine & Trans Questions on a 78 Camaro Z28

I am wondering if it is possible to tell if the 350 in this car is a 4 bolt main without dropping the pan. My bud is selling the car but doesn't know anything about the engine other than it's a 350.

Another question is what auto trans comes stock in the 78 Z28? How hard is it to rebuild these transmissions?

Thx,
Chris

you could get the casting number off the block and check it that way or just not worry about it untill you break it and they came with 350 turbo tranny that can be rebuilt for a descent amount

I am considering this for a project car for the strip and would like to know what i am getting into before i buy it. The problem with the trans is it won't shift into third. Any idea what a rebuild kit would cost? This is a low budget project by the way. I don't want to tear up my cherry 92 RS on the track.

Most guys around here that rebuild 350 auto's out of there garage charge around 300 bucks. Its not a job to do yourself it requires several special tools and pullers.

Dont worry if its a four bolt block, if its original its not! You can buy forged splayed 4 bolt main caps from Milodon and drill the extra two holes for each cap yourself with the supplied jig that comes with the kit and it will be stronger than a factory 4 bolt block.

I have access to a shop that should have all the tools to do the rebuild and i consider myself to be mechanically inclined so i am wondering if i got a book for rebuilding transmissions what would the difficulty level be.

That's cool i wasn't aware you could modify a two bolt into a 4 bolt. Looks like i may have found my next project car as soon as my jeep sells.
Thanks.
Chris
