Stock spec front coils....do they settle?
Stock spec front coils....do they settle?
I replaced my front coils with some Federal Mogul (I think) manufactured stockers. I also replaced my rear single leafs to multi leafs.
I look like I am launching sitting still. How much if any will these springs settle?

Great site.
Most replacement front springs are a bit "tall" regardless of model, year or application. That's just how the aftermarket does things, in my expereince. I think they make basically one spring that covers many applications, covering a large range of weight. A/C or no A/C seems to be the only thing that makes any meaningful difference- and even that is slight. Plus I don't think they "match" the front and rear spring with any real amount of care.
In short, I've been where you are many times.
You'll drop about 1/2 inch in front from settling in about 6 months. It'll take a decade to drop another 1/2". Of course, your rears will drop about half that much in the meantime anway, leaving things looking much the same.
Although much frowned-upon I have cut front coils MANY MANY times over the years. Just about any stock replacement front coil spring can stand to have 1/2 a coil whacked off to bring the car back to roughly "level" by eye. You can go 3/4 of a coil if you want it to have a nice "rake" (similar to when your stock front coils were worn out).

PS- forget about good front end geometry. These cars were nightmares of geomentry at ALL points in their travel. Get the ride height where you want it and then get an alignment done. Unless you're into some semi-serious suspension changes (including possibly relocating varous suspension hard-points) that's about the best you can do on a weekend-warrior budget.
I've never seen them settle much. I put a pair of sb springs from Detroit spring. you know the guys who go by "factory blue prints". yeah right sure. ended up putting in a set of "6 cylinder" springs. That put it right at the factory ride height. In the future I'll go with short springs and ride adjusters like AFCO makes
I've had three sets of springs for the front. From three (supposed) different manufacturers. Evey one of them made my car look like a 4X4. The fouth time (today) I put on two inch lowering springs. What a piece of cake. No spring compressor. No special tools. Just my trusty set of metric (don't ask) sockets and mismatched SAE oper-end box wrenches. Pulled the old new ones out and dropped the new drop-springs in. I did the g-machine kit and they sent me 4X4 springs too. Go figure. I'm dropping the rear 2" tomorrow.
