Rack and Pinion

I am planning on putting a manual rack and pinion system in my car. I want a quick as possible ratio. The only one i could find under 3.75 turns is the steeroids kit but i do not want to go that route. All i want is the rack for now and i will get to the shafty buisness later. I was wondering if anyone knew if it mattered weather the rack was mounted in front or behind the crossmemeber? I was thinking of the flaming river mustang II but i dont know exacty what the difference between that and the wilwood pinto, all i can tell is that there are mounting holes on the mustang II unit. I have been looking at alot of different sites and they are all confusing me even more. if anyone has advice for me please let me know. Thanks

oops

i just realized how silly one of the things i said was. Of course it matters if its infront or behind, disregard that question. Does anyone know of a rack i can buy that is rear steer?

By using the steering arms off a Chevelle, you can switch it to a front steer. I had a Pinto rack on my 68 for a while, but even after shortening it, I could not get rid of the bump steer. I think if I had cut a couple more inches out, it would have been better.

I don't think the Mustang II rack will fit behind the crossmember without some surgery, but I haven't measured it yet. It will also need to be checked for angles to eliminate bump steer. I wonder if anyone here is using the Steeroids kit and can comment on how the bumpsteer is? They sell a manual setup also I am pretty sure.

If you want a quicker box, get a later model (mid 80's) Z28 or Monte Carlo SS. They are around 3 turns lock to lock and can be adapted easier than the rack and pinion.

i read somewhere that you can take the guts out of a mid-late 80's camaro steering box and put them into the 1st gens housing with no trouble. and it is a little less than 3 turns i believe.
