Questions for 1st gen owners...
Questions for 1st gen owners...
Hey I am a 4th gen guy I don't know a whole lot about 1st generation. A buddy of mine ran into a guy selling a 67 SS in my area. He says its got a 460 in it now(that possible?) wasn't sure about the trans...400 turbo maybe? And 4:11 gears. He swears up and down it runs a 7.5 in the quarter on nitrous(ran 2x)...how much shot I dunno. From what I heard its in very good shape cosmetically not quite a show winner but a new paint job with some restoration. He was asking for $9000 and he said it was pretty firm. Is that a decent price? I thought its not a steal but a fair price? What do you guys think? thanks!
mods if you think this should be in the lounge I am sorry I wasn't sure.....

It could be a 460 (030 over 454), and 9K for one in cherry shape ain't bad, but I have a hard time buying the 7.5 1/4 stuff.. I would have to see a video, with the time displayed..
Due to the "questionable" et brag.., I would double check the car real good before plunking down any cash..

I would have to agree with Texlurch on questioning the 7.5 in the quarter time. I can't recall the last time I even saw anyone sell a motor that can make a car run in the 7s for under 10,000. Check the car real good cause if everything else is correct, then it's a pretty good deal, especially if it is truly a 7 sec car.
It's going to be pretty easy to tell if its a 7 second car. First off, look for the tubbed out rear end. It would have to have a pretty heft rear, narrowed and some fairly wide slicks to get the car to hook up. Of course this also means a ladder bar or 4 link suspension and coilovers.
Also, look for the 10 point cage. Without one, the 1/4s will be a wrinkled mess, the glass would be busted, and the dragstrip wouldn't let them even run.
I'm not up on all the nhra rules regarding a 7 second car, but I would bet it may need a chute, a full fire extinguisher system, etc.
The motor is next. I would think you would need aroun 1200hp to run a time like that. A standard GM block isn't going to do it. Your in the realm of extreme nitrous sytems, large blowers, alcohol, etc.
Bottomline, a 7 second car is going to be barely, if at all, able to even drive on the street.
Now, 7 second 1/8th mile I would have no problems believing. Many places in the country only have a 1/8 mile track, so it would not be uncommon to hear 1/8th mile times.
Anyway, if it is a true 67 SS, you would do pretty good to pick it up around that price. It books much higher, especially in decent condition. However, the 67 SS NEVER came with a 454, so right off the bat it is not all original...
Best bet is to copy all the info from the trim tag, the vin number, the numbers from the motor, etc. They can all be looked up online to see what the car REALLY is, and then you can get better information from us or other camaro enthusiasts at that point.

I think your buddy met to say 1/8th mile verses 1/4 mile.
A $9K car running 7.5's in the 1/8th and only needing alittle more work to be a nice looker would sound/read alittle more believable.
Otherwise, as others saying here, it would not be a street car, or very streetable at that.
