project building a 1000 hp 454 - every opinion welcome

Hello,

we plan to built a new project with parts we already have.

The goal is to reach the 1000 hp (engine).

So what we have to start with are :

* a 4 main 454 with GM all forged internals
* stock rectangular intake heads
* a 6-71 blower, complete with dual edelbrock carbs

This engine will be supposed to reach the 1000 hp border on RACE fuel.

what i plan to use to built this engine is :

* stay with all the OEM block parts. Compression ratio should be 8:1
* ARP studs for main caps
* ARP studs for heads
* the 6-71 should be at 10 psi
* the crank will be double keyed
* COMP Ultra pro magnum rocker (RR=1.7)
* Comp cam : CB 280AH-14 (232 / 237 ; .547 / .547 ; LSA = 114)
* Summit C4264 steel balancer
* 2'' primaries shorties headers
* Edelbrock 160 gph fuel pump

Any advice on this set-up? or suggestions in upgrading things before i order them ?

You've got the blower cam covered, but instincts tell me that a 232/237 on a 114 lobe center is more of a torquer cam when installed in a big block like that. You may make huge power with it, but most likely at less than 5500 RPM.

If you want 1000+ HP, it seems to me that you will want to put in some extra duration on both the intake and exhaust side, especially since you are running carbuerators. I run a 230/236 cam in a smallblock and it runs out of steam at 6200 RPM. I think you, with 70 cubic inches more displacement will find you need additional duration. As a wild guess, I'd say about 12 degrees on both lobes.

You are studding the bottom end, which is good, but when you put in studs it requires that you line bore the block to realign the main caps in order to take advantage of the new-found stability from the studs.

Don't count on the blower for all 1000 HP: Make sure the heads flow with as much porting as you can afford. Especially the exhaust ports! The better the airflow on the cylinder heads, the more efficient your power adders will be in making power.

Now what about alcohol or water injection? Can you use that for assisting with cooling your intake charge? If so, you may be able to add a few more pounds of boost for creating greater gains.

hello ws6transam and thanks you for your answer.

I also beleive my first choice in cam is not enough to feed the engine. I haven't think about water injection but i beleive it is a good idea. Alcohol is too difficult to get in my country so it is not a choice for me.

The stock forged pistons are 8.5/1 which i beleive ok for the set-up but can these pistons handle the power ?

I'm also considering the choice for transmission. I beleive the best way to go for a 1000hp trans is a built TH400. Do you have any recommandation about trans builder for that ?

Your lower end will not handle 1000hp.
Your cam is small as already said.
6-71 blower is way too small - 8-71 at a minmum
You are going to need a serious set of aftermarket aluminimum heads to flow that air required.

With all that said, why do you need 1000hp?

With the setup you have listed you should be in the high 600 to 700 hp range on race gas. IMHO, that is pretty freaken awesome. Something to consider.
