Need opinions on carburetors
I am thinking of buying a new carb for my Chevelle. I am currently using an old Holley double pumper 800. It has a manual choke and mechanical secondaries.
I am looking at a 750 - 800 cfm carbs. It needs to be easy to adjust and work on.
I want to know what the "best bang for my buck is". Have we heard this before??? LOL
Some of the ones I am looking at are in the Summit catalog.....
Holley street avenger 770cfm
Holley 4160 750cfm
Edelbrock performer 750cfm
Edelbrock EPS 800cfm
Speed Demon 750cfm
Any replies (good or bad) would be appreciated!
thanks people.

easy to adjust and work on is the definition of a old holley DP. However, you will be working on it a bit because they are picky. Personally I still like the Qjets with a few tweaks for a reliable no-maitaince carb. Hell of a good carb, pretty basic/simple. And did I mention CHEAP?
.
Good Luck.

Check out the Jet Q-jets (they come in 3 stages of tuning) while you have the summit catalog open. I'd either run that or the Street Avenger. All the magazines that have tried them like them, but no telling how biased they are. SpeedDemons are nice, but pricey.
If you want performance, stay away from the Edelcrock AFB. It would be OK for a daily driver or cruiser but they are somewhat lacking for racing. I'd love to get rid of mine. It continually idles high, then the elcetric choke won't work at first start up when cold. Then when it does kick in it chokes too long and too much.

Fits all the criteria...
750 cfm
easy to adjust and work on
best bang for your buck
Unfortunately the Jet-Chips Q-jets only come with an electric choke. If you want a manual or divorced style choke, you'll either have to go with Edelbrock's Q-jet or an OEM replacement (which actually aren't bad performers).
Thanks for the replies !
Anybody use the Holley Street Avenger ?
Any more good (or bad) words about the Speed Demon ?
I think I am leaning towards this Speed Demon w/ vacuum secondaries and electric choke.
OR the Edelbrock AVS.
Any other inputs ??

Edelbrock Performer.
I've had two Holleys strapped to my 327 and I hated em both. Backfired through the 750 I had, blew out a power valve, and the thing just never worked right since that. Tried to bolt on my buddy's 600 Holley, and the thing shot gasoline up through the little vent stem at the top! That's when I broke down and bought an Edelbrock Performer with electric choke. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It requires minimal tuning and I can still run down most cars on the highway
Anybody want to buy either of those Holleys from me? They prolly only need a rebuild. I'm just not motivated to fix em since I have an Edelbrock now

I have seen and talked to guys that had JET carbs and they were very happy, most had Holleys prior to the JET and did not like them. I have also heard good things about the edlebrock stuff. I am not very knowledgeable about carbs in general and only passing what I have talked to guys that had carb setups. I can say stay away from the BG stuff. My old XO used to work for them when his was going to college, and told me that quality control was bad and the customer service was zero unless you were a big spender. Just my two cents, hope it helps
