nasty backfire at engine shut down

Might be running rich, might just be idling too high. I'm assuming we're talking about a carbureted setup here. When you shut off a carbureted engine the ignition turns off but the carb is still metering fuel into the engine as it spins down. That then gets into the exhaust and the slightest thing can set it off. Bang!
Shutting down from a relatively high RPM can load up the exhaust with fuel as can running too rich, expecially on the idle circuits.
Oh, and one other thing- do you have an exhaust leak near the engine?? That'll greatly aggravate a problem like this.
Any other symptoms that may have cropped up at the same time this started happening?
