I have a '68 ( ? Z28 ? ). When I got it was already about 70% restored. It has Z28 badges on it so I was wondering if at one time it really was a Z28 or if those were just added later. The gut I got it from said he thought it was. I know the engine & transmission are not original. It has a 355 & TH400 now but the hole it still in the firewall where a manual transmition used to be, and it looks like it has an old Oldsmobile rearend so I've been told. Is there any way to tell for sure if it really was a Z28 originally?

Mine has all of that with the exception of the 4 speed, but the hole that the clutch assembley went through still has part of the rubber boot left so I know there used to be one. Is there anywhere that I can sent the VIN # and get a copy of what it was originally sold as. I know that there is a company that does this for Mustangs, thay send you a reprodution of the original window tag, but I've never been able to find a place to do Camaros.

 

No, there isn't a service for Camaros yet. What is the date on the firewall trim tag of your car? Does your car have the Z28 emblems on the front fender or 302 emblems? Open the glove bocx door and check the decal for the tire pressure(if it's still there). The tire pressure decal should refer to 15" wheels/tires, not 14". It should have 4 leaf multileaf springs in the rear. Does it have the full height rear bumper guards that extend above and below the bumper? It should have a 12 bolt rear. The front power disc brakes should be the 4 piston calipers. The 68's are the hardest to prove anything with. The fact that the car already has had the restoration started makes it even harder because anything could have been changed.

Look at the cowl tag to find out if its a real Z.

The cowl tag on a 68 Camaro does not have information to identify if it's a Z28 or not. The 67 has the 4L code and the 69's made at the Norwood plant with a build date of 12/68 or later will have the X33 or X77.
