I"m trying to make some power, need some input

I'm wanting to make somewhere around 600 hp/600ft lbs naturally aspirated. I'm going with a forged 383 kit from eagle. It's going in an '84 firebird that's going to be raced and might get drove to the car show every once in a while.

What is/are your question/questions? It's possible, but you are going to need a very good top end for the motor to make that kind of hp.

Well I was just wondering what would be a good cam choice I have some broddix heads but I'm not sure what kind they are. I know that they have 2.02 intake and 1.6 ex valves. I'd imagine that they could support the kind of power I'm looking for, or at least be reworked to do so.

.600+ lift solid roller cam, 12.5+ compression, extremely lightweight pistons and port the hell out of those heads.

That is not a realistic hp number for a pump gas 383, IMHO. Anyway, a HR cam with an intake duration of ~235-240 @ 0.050" is as big as I would consider for a street car.

He didn't say street car...he said racer and weekend car shows... We see the craziest stuff drive to local car shows.

Oh paper, my combo could make 600hp with a few upgrades, not 600ftlbs tho..a 383 would be close also..

396 sbc
Dart Pro 1 230cc heads
12:1 comp.
Super Victor intake ported
1-3/4" longtube header
Custom cam in the 260/270 duration @ .050" .650" lift+
Pro System 800+ cfm carb, maybe dominator if it's worth power.

Mine has 11.5:1, small carb, less cam, and NO portwork to anything. It's probably in the 550-575hp range. 3550lbs/ 127+ mph. Oh and if you did BIG compression(15:1), you could do more cam, more rpm, and run Q16 fuel and probably see 50hp on top of above numbers...just my guess though. No reason a stout 383 can't make well over 600hp these days with simple parts.

Thanks for the replys, Hopefully I can get close to my goal on a budget too. I've seen some budget builds in some magazine that made some pretty insane power. I"m not really wanting to turn the motor too high, 7500 to maybe 8000 rpms jsut to make the motor last a little bit longer.

Look at those engines though.... no accessories, or exhaust.... usually an unlimited budget.

Ported 230cc pro 1's and a good solid roller are going to be your good bet to get to that kind of power. Compression and cam choice will depend on fuel, weight, and drivetrain.

Take a look at what can be bought also...from a well known builder.. Pump gas 434, low rpm.

Wow that 434 is a hell of a motor, I wish I had that kind of money though lol. I wonder what kind of numbers they're getting on higher compression with 110 octane
