How to wire alternator with Painless wiring kit?
I am wiring a 69 SS with an internal regulator for an 80's something 350. I got the power going to the post on the alternator. Then looking at the front of the alternator the one wire from the fusebox goes on a prong and what connects to the other prong. The kit told me to wire a jumper from the power on the lug to the other prong. It started smoking so now what?

You might have accidently shorted to the alternator case. If memory serves, 12v from a keyed source goes to pin 1. Pin 2 gets 12v constant. The easiest way to feed pin 2 is a short jumper to the output stud. Use a insulated ring terminal for the stud end, insulated spade for pin 2 end.
Accidently shorting the wire to something or the alternator is internally shorting. If you have a multimeter, check for a short to ground with the wire installed (check at the stud to alternator case). It should read near zero (short) if it was bad enough to cause smoke. Then disconnect wire from pin 2. If short goes away, spade terminal might have been shorting to the case. Or alternator has the short. To determine that, put multimeter lead directly on terminal 2. Also, make sure pin 2 isn't kicked over to the side.
Needless to say, battery should be disconnected.
