How much $$$ for a 1979 T/A

My friend and I are getting one in trade for a LT4 Hotcam Kit and our labor installing it. It's a 1979 WS-6 Trans-Am. I doubt the numbers match but it has a good 400 punched .40 over in it. We plan on cleaning it up (not restoring it but making it nice, like 4th gen seats in it and stuff). We plan on doing the body work and spraying it. We aren't talking about a show car but when we're done it should be a nice car for someone. Any idea what we can get for a car like this? Any tips on where to get parts would be appreciated also. Thanks!

Is it a 4spd ? because only 4spd T/A's in `79 got the 400 Pontiac. The other 2 engines are the 301 or the Old's 403
An good #2 `79 400 4spd can go for $15,000
Olds motor cars are closer to $9,000

Unfortunately it's not, it's the automatic. Thanks though. How good a condition does it have to be in to go for $9000 do you think? Thanks!

My guess is that it would have to be in pretty good condition - or you'd have to have a pretty enthusiastic buyer - to get $9,000. I've seen all original, very nice examples go in the 10-12,000 range. If the 400 is built really well and it goes like stink, that certainly adds some value though. These cars are definitely on the upswing value-wise, but they're not quite blue-chip yet.

If you are getting a whole car in exchange for a cam swap, I don't how great of condition the car can be in. 9000 seems a bit high unless the motor was just rebuilt and the car is in excellent shape inside and out. From what I read the car seems like a 2500 car but post some more details and im sure you willl get a better idea of a price from someone on the board.

Just pick up an auto trader or look at their website for a comparison of cars like it in your area.

The more original you can keep it, the more you'll get for it. I would not add in "upgrades" like 4th gen seats. Anyone serious about buying a nice stock-looking Trans Am from that era will not be much interested in a modified car. It's 40-year old guys like me who will pay a good buck for a nice stock example, because we grew up with those cars in high school back in the late 1970's. Back then, the Trans Am, Z-28 and Corvette were the only game in town for performance from the factory.
