So what you're saying is that the hole is there in the hood for the air-cleaner to stick up through, so want to know how to get the air-filter to sit higher up from the engine into the hood???

Well, you could A) get a higher rise intake (such as an Edelbrock "Air-gap" intake which sits a bit higher due to the air "gap" design), B) use a 1" carb spacer, which will not only raise the carb & air-cleaner up an inch, but will also increase the HP & TQ of the engine (I read an article in a magazine that dyno tested ONE engine, with various intakes, both with and without carb spacers, and the spacer plates seemed to add power every time), and/or C) buy a taller air-filter. I've never specifically looked for one, but I'm sure at a speed shop is where you'd find those air-filters that are about 6" tall as opposed to the regular 3-4", so that would have it sticking up higher as well.

HTH

(BTW: check out the pics of the '73 in my sig................that car has an Air-gap intake on it, and although it may be hard to tell from the picture, it does sit a little higher than a regular intake).
