HELP!!! dropping a lt1 in a 67 camaro

HELP!!! dropping a lt1 in a 67 camaro

okay. i have a 1967 camaro. and instead of buying a motorcycle. im thinkin about buyin an lt1 and putting it in my car. i called a few local shops they said theyve done it before for about $650 for labour.

i have a 350 right now with 2.02 heads and a lot of stuff. but i could sell it for about $1000.

i wanna do this for the better gas mileage. the sound of a lt1 with a nice cam and just the modern performance.

Would i be able to bolt my th-350 to the 97 lt1 engine? that would save me a lot.

Would my rearend handle it? freshly built 10 bolt - 3.73's, eaton posi, new bearings and all that.

is there anything i should be aware of before i do this. and im expecting to spend about $3500 after everything. how close am i?

let me know if i should do anything else or if theres any problems.

$650 sounds light on the labor unless thats just to drop it in and have it towed home. Theres a lot things to consider. fuel pump with return line. VSS/mechanical speedo. tranny cross member, shorter drive shaft, o2 sensors, air intake system. I probably had 20 hours alone in just straightening out and cleaning up the wiring. Don't know why you'd be using a th350 when the PCM is designed to work with a 4L60E. Depending how you drive and what you have for tires, a 6cylinder can tear a 10 bolt up. I'd say $3500 plus the price of the engine and tranny.

i would take my engine out and i know about all the ecm crap. they do too. i wanna keep my th-350 to save on money. i just got it done up and my rearend done. he said my rearend would hole 500 rear wheel horsepower as long as i didn't run slicks. slicks would be okay a few times but not often.

02 sesnors and everythign isn't a problem. just drill and tap. id take my car their with no engine. then get it put in. his done new camaro engine swaps so he knows a lot.

With the 350 you'll need a VSS. I'm not sure how you would dummy out the feedback from the shift solenoids to keep from getting a code.

The pcm on a A4 feeds through the coils for each shift solenoid. If ones in the wrong place, sticks it'll gice you an ses to let you know there is a tranny problem. It also controls timing between shifts. The VSS vehicle speed sensor tells the pcm how fast the vehicle is turning and operates the shift points, cruise and speedo. I put in a mechanical and a vss so I can use my original speedo. Since I don't use any vss outputs from the pcm, i always have a problem code when i scan it but it doesn't activate the ses.
I picked up my LT1/4L60E as a package that the guy wouldn't seperate. dont blame him. I ended up selling my B&M built 350 to pay for it, then put a TCI rebuild kit in it to bring it up to a "street fighter"
AN ECM has something like 32 connections. a PCM has 128.

If better gas mileage is what you're after, why not get a smaller carb, or FI kit, get an MSD ignition, fresh tune up and put a 700R4 in there? It wuld be cheaper and just as effective. To get the LT1 without the new trans is not going to get you where you want to be, IMHO

I am with Zoomin, If your 350 now is a solid engine, get a multiport EFI kit. Or buy some good heads and slap a TBI on. You should have no problems doing that. If youdo go with an LT1 and stick a bigger cam in it you will need "LT1-edit" which I *think* is about $100. Could be wrong on the price though. THe stock PCM gets confused by a big cam. I think you can also deal with the tranny codes and possibly the VSS with LT1edit as well.

okay. say i get a multiport EFI kit and put in a 700r4. what would my gas mileage and pefermance be like? im pushin like 375 hp flywheel.

I would much rather have a good ole 350 .30 over then a LT1, there nice but I just love and old car with a nice 355 in er!

what about getting a ECM from a stickshift car? Won't be trying to mess with any shift solenoids then!
Yes, the TH-350 will bolt up without a hitch, but you might have to switch flexplates?

As for the speed input, I think it's painless wiring makes a doohickey that bolts on where the speedo cable would, and makes an electrical output for the computer.

oh, and the 10-bolt will handle a stock LT1 just fiiiine, assuming it's in proper shape and all. Heck, even drop in the LT4 hotcam and you'll be fine.

Yes the T350 will bolt up fine, use the LT1 flexplate and starter. You may have to drill new convertor bolt holes, depending on pattern (I used a TCI flywheel on mine)
Exhaust and motor mounts bolt up also
Dump the stock computer and run an aftermarket box, saves on the B/S with the speedo and trans controls. I used an Accell DFI Gen 6 on mine.
