HEI Question

Quick question, I just picked up a 72 C10 that has a run of the mill 350 in it with HEI. I changed the fuel pump and drove it a quarter mile when it stumbled, back fired, and died. I got it and home and it seems there is a wire from the starter soleinoid up to the BATT terminal on the HEI. IT ran fine before but now there is now power from it and no spark. The wire looks like it has been spliced and fixed in several locations. Can the wire come from the IGN block on the fuse panel to the BATT side or does it need to lead up from the starter? Im gonna run the new wire tommorow and the fuse panel is much closer.

That should work it just needs to be keyed power.

Most likely a left over from the original dist setup.
Some early cars had a ballast resistor on the ign feed to the coil reducing the voltage to coil ( was a lower than 12V coil ) during normal running.
When starting the starter solenoid supplied 12V direct to the coil giving more spark while cranking only
