fuel cell question

Hey I just put a fuel cell in my trunk, and e I was wondering what I should do about the valve that comes out of the top. One guy said I should run a line out of the top and then feed the line out of the trunk so the fumes go outside but it makes just as much sense to me to just put a breather type thing on there that would only let air in there to replace the fuel but wouldn't let the fumes out. Which would be legal to run at the drag strip or does it even matter?

Re: fuel cell question

vent it outside, you need fumes to go out as well, temp changes will effect the psi of fumes in the tank more then the engine running

and are you sure the cell being inside is allowed at the track? IIRC, you need a metal bulkhead between the fuel cell and the passenger compartment

Re: fuel cell question

Yeah I just checked out the NHRA rule book so I'm going to have to end up putting a fire wall to seperate the trunk from the driver's compartment, I also checked on the rules involving the fuel lines and I pretty much did everything I possibly could to fail a tech inspection, fuel lines in the frame rails, more than 12 inches of rubber hose, nothing to protect it from the fly wheel, and the fuel cell isn't attached to the frame. Do they check for these type of things just for a test and tune day?

Re: fuel cell question

Depends on your track/inspectors. I've never seen a problem with a cell bolted to the trunk floor. Run your lines on the rocker side of the frame rails and there shouldn't be a need to run the line inside of a tube for flywheel explosions. If the small section rubber line is hidden under the car and you tech off the trailer (if you use one) you won't have a problem unless the tech reads this board and knows you.....

You will need that bulkhead however.

Re: fuel cell question

markink is right on everything he said, rarely do they ever check that kinda stuff unless it appears unsafe, or you win a race and some jerk complains. I don't run a bulkhead because I have a backseat, and they don't care (car runs 125mph in the 1/4) i also have all my lines inside my frame rails, again, they don't care. At my local track you can damned near get away with anything (a guy tonight ran 9.53 with no cage and wearing shorts and t-shirt, much less a farking license. MAJOR MAJOR NO NO) Basically what it depends on is how leniant your track officials are, of course its better to do what the rules say.
