Question Firebird formula questions

i am considering trading my v6 for a 1976 firebird formula with a 400 big block and auto trans. My question is, how much horsepower and torque does this engine make? How reliable is it or is there any significant problems that commonly occur with them? I understand that with a car of age like this one i should expect some things to break, but i will be driving this car daily. So any information would be appreciated.

400 Formula...

1976 was a pretty sad year for power output. Even so, the 400 made 185HP/325 ft/lb. torque. These cars are a lot of fun to own, with low maintenance. I had a 1977 Trans Am way back many years ago, with the T/A 6.6 litre 400 which made 200HP (220HP in 1978).

Expect this car to have a lot of bottom end torque. A good carb & ignition curve tune-up will really wake up some hidden ponies. They handle well and are great on the highway. They are also getting a lot harder to find in nice original shape. Just my own opinion, but if the Formula is in nice shape and drives and handles well and looks good, I'd take it over a V6.

The 400s and 455 pontiacs had one hell of a strong bottom end. Slap some good heads on and a cam and you will make some serious grunt. Again, they are a torque engine.... very strong down low. Just dont over revv them and youll be fine. 76 pontiacs were pretty low compression (smogger). If you drive it, and like the way it drives go for it. There are no major issues with them. Rust I suppose is the worst. Pontiac parts are expensive to buy though, be prepared for that.
Good Luck.
