engine combo

im builing a 327 for a 3rd gen camaro(i did check the casting #'s). the only things i dont have are the heads the rest came with the car.
327ci
w.p. s/r torquer heads w/ 67 cc combustion chambers and 170 cc runners
cam: .480/.480 lift and adv duration of 302/302
edelbrock performer intake
headers
and a holley 600 carb

i was just wondering what everyone thought of it.

Re: engine combo

What are you looking to get out of the 327? I'm assuming with that aggressive duration cam you're looking to rev the living hell out of the thing down the strip. That's probably going to put your peak power up in the 7000-8000rpm range. You're probably going to choke the car out before then though with that 600cfm carb.

Check out this article, these guys do a pretty serious street 327:

Re: engine combo

Too much cam for the carb/intake/heads. You didn't list the duration @ .050" but from the advertised duration, sounds like an older style cam that would probably be around 230* @ .050. A newer design cam around 218* @ .050 would be a better match, especially in a car with an automatic and typical diff gear around 3.23-3.42.

If you do want to use as big a cam as you listed, you need more head/intake/carb/gear to make it work.

Re: engine combo

You sure it's a 327? Could just be a 327 block with a 350 crank stuck in it. Some people always assume more displacement is better.

Re: engine combo

thanks for the replys. it is a 327 i mesured the stroke. the cam was free with the car and i did not know the power would be that high up there. this is supposed to be a street car. the cam is an older design i think because it is a crane cam and the specs came from the cam that is supposed to replace it. ive actually decided that the heads can wait, i may get some better ones later but i want to get the motor in the car. oh and the grind number is
h-302 if you would like check it out and maybe give a couple of suggestions for a better cam.
thanks for the good info

Re: engine combo

Read that article I posted on the 327. They make a pretty grunty street motor out of old parts and a cam kit.

Re: engine combo

You don't really need the fuelies. I ran my 327 with a stock crank, stock rods, Sterling pistons, .020" over, 1.94/1.50 **** GM iron heads, single plenum intake, Holley 750, and some kinda high duration low lift cam. It put out about 350hp and rev'd up to 6500rpm. It as a little aggressive for street driving, but in my light *** car it was fine.

Re: engine combo

ok but my 327 has heads that have very small ports and valves (i saw bone stock 305 heads with bigger ports). for the cam i know roller is better but for the budget i am trying to keep what would be a good hyd. flat cam

Re: engine combo

Look up the head castings on www.mortec.com. They're probably crappy, standard 1.94/1.50 heads just like every other Chevy engine. My 327 was just standard flat tappet hydraulic too. Totally met IHRA/NHRA stock class regulations

Re: engine combo

Oh, man, those are crap. Go junkyard a set of 1.94's for like $20. If you really want to get saucy, ream the 1.94's out to 2.02's and buy new valves.

Re: engine combo

Check 'em out. The 1.94 ****ty heads that everybody throws away are fine for street engines, especially in smaller displacement motors that don't suck as much air. Either that or pony up $900 for a set of Trick Flow heads and enjoy the power

Thanks about the Camaro. She's definitely one of my favorite cars.
