do i need smaller jets? boggs down low.

the motor is a 327 with a holley 650dper it has 62s in the P and 84s in the S.....when u blurp the throttle it wants to bog down and pop a bit....and when your drivin you have to feather the clutch to get it to go...if you try to get out of the hole quick at all it hesitates bad and hunges, dies, lunges, dies, a good amout. also it failed the emmissins test big time....runnin rich and has a miss. whats the best way to go about starting to work on this problem?

it sounds like have to adjust everything and to pass emissions you want to lean it out a bit. I could try to explain how you can fix this but would leave something out so read first...if you have any more questions feel free to ask because a Holley is extremely simple to work on if you understand how it works

read this whole thing. Ive read it and the information is very precise

misses = plug wire popped off 90% of the time, and that cylinder wont burn fuel, so be careful, but after you read that and fix what i think it is, like he ^ said, if it still has issues check back here.

oh and, you may want to try running ethanol blend fuel and advancing the timing a few degrees for a more complete burn, but lean and advancing is not a good combo, just my 2 cents, thankfully we dont have emissions here

i also remember hearing of guys running smaller pulleys on smog pumps, and extra cat converters to pass emissions, and some really dedicated street racers even building special motors to pass smog test with, and replacing the motor later, or even trailering the car with a brand new motor that has about 30 minutes of time in it's life where it will blow clean emissions, and using that first 30 minutes on the test... the right way to do it, run lean less fuel = less evil fumes, and if you dont come close, extra cats, if you come close, bigger smog pump is what the old auto manufacturers used, i recommend you do too, and conveniently throw the smog pump's belt on a high rpm pass lol

well it has no smog pump or cats...the motor passed just fine in 96 the last time it was tested, the guy said it runns cleaner then most of the new cars "back in 96"...since then its been in storage and i rebuilt the carb....same jets were put back in....floats were set the same as befor....everything is the same but im sure the idle mixture is not exactly as befor the rebuild....and we upped the timming from 4 to 8degs....ill read your links and see what i can learn

If you left any gas in the carb when you stored it, that gas dried to a varnish and clogged the idle circuits. Drain the carb and force carb cleaner spray into every tiny orifice...from the bowl out and from the throat back into the bowl.

Do it a few times, as it takes time to loosen the varnish. I have this same carb on my boat, and learned to drain the carb every time it's laid up for the winter. In the spring, before filling with gas, I partially fill the bowl with carb cleaner again, paying attention to the idle circuits....the tiniest holes you could imagine.

That procedure has worked for many years now. Before, I always had to pull side bowls off and spray/flush the thing with several cans of carb cleaner.

The first thing you should probably make sure is in good order is the ignition system. If it's been sitting that long make sure the rotor isn't corroded, check for good spark, proper advance, etc

carb has been rebuilt about a month ago ...it sat in carb cleaner for over a day and i took an air gun and blew every hole clean.....as for the ign system this could be the case....but other then takin the cap off and lookin at it to see whats up im not sure how to check for good spark...proper advance...or anythin like that....im new to the hole carb setup....im 21 and have a built TPI motor in my truck.....all runs off the ECM so thats all i know is the newer stuff

Make sure that the accelerator pumps are adjusted correctly, sounds like a lean bog to me.Jets alone won't cure it.
If they are adjusted correctly the next thing you should look at is the pump squirters.slowly increase the sizes of the holes until the bog goes away. It's been a while since I fooled around with a Holley but I am pretty sure you can buy the pump squirters in different sizes and swap them around instead of drilling out the openings.
Try these two steps and I will bet you can back off the main jet sizes a couple of steps and clean up that idle.
