dad's '77 RS. looking for aftermarket valve covers/air cleaner for father's day gift
dad's '77 RS. looking for aftermarket valve covers/air cleaner for father's day gift
so i guess i really should get something for my dad, hopefully this will motivate him to get his car out and about some this summer.
'77 RS, 305, 13k miles, red and black, spoiler, rear window louver, all original except exhaust.
i've looked through some Summitt and Jeg's catalogs, and i'm basically after a package deal. valve covers, air cleaner, timing chain, etc.
i believe he said before, "i really should get a chrome air cleaner." so it's going to be chrome, and no aluminum.
are there any particular brands that are good quality? i'm not interested in the kits that are $50, they just look meh.
and the last question. where is the best and cheapest place to get this stuff?
i'm liking this one now, but it's still hard to come up with $200 since i'm a broke-*** college student.

How about chrome with the emblem stamped in?

They don't come with the air filter lid though.

summit usually has some good deals, swap meets have good deals, Ebay has some neat stuff too,
as far as quality, all the valve covers and air cleaners are stamped in taiwan unless they're billet, and then there's a chance they're machined here, but our machinists usually dont work cheap enough anyway so taiwan it is.
anyway for about $20 on ebay, I got a nice set of new chrome stamped steel valve covers about a year ago, and they have flame designs on the top stamped in too, adds some character under the hood. ebay has a lot of neat little stuff like that. And like i said it's all the same taiwanese or chinese quality. I had an old set of 'american' valve covers that warped after a couple uses, these cheap ebay covers are still in perfect condition.
some other things that arent expensive but i consider my best investment are the T-handle valve cover screws, available at any decent auto parts store, $10 per side about, and since i like chrome i always buy chrome brackets when i bend or damage a bracket (don't ask)
if you want matching timing chain cover and air cleaner you'll be able to find them all seperate cheaper, but you'll have to look, however, they dont all really have to match to look good, my timing cover is generic, my air cleaner is edelbrock, and my valve covers have flames stamped in, but i put an edelbrock breather on the valve covers and edelbrock oil plug/cap, so they look like they belong, just a thought.
I'm a broke college kid too so i know how money can be, but to conclude, seriously look around on ebay, they have the widest selection of designs and whatnot. and they're by far the cheapest. everything you buy that's stamped is going to be the same crap steel, so unless you are paying an arm for each machined billet valve cover, they're the same. T-handles are a must, air cleaners matching valve covers is neat, but a matching timing chain cover is virtually pointless because of the fact that the water pump and pulleys hide the thing, but the chrome around the edges is pretty cool nonetheless. and hopefully this gives you some ideas, and goodluck
