Hey guys, I've got a new problem for you to help me with. Recently my carburetor decided to call it quits on my 1977 camaro, I'm fairly sure its a 305 V8, and when I took it to a chevy dealership they told me that the only carbs they could order for me have been sitting on shelves for the last 30 years and are all crummy. I was inclined to believe them when I tested out one and my car died twice in less than a minute on city streets. So now here's my dilema, I need a new carb that can be installed in my car, that won't be crummy. While I'm at it, since I'm buying a new one, i wouldn't mind putting a little performance in it as well. I'm looking to spend less than $500, and to get something that will give me more performance than my previous stock carb. Any suggestions?

Try an edelbrock performer carb. Your carb might be a "heat choke", so you might have to change the intake manifold as well as the carb (because if you bought an edelbrock carb with electric choke, you need some provisions for it I believe). I don't think you would want a manual choke either. Good news = If $500 is your budget, you can get an intake manifold and carb that fits your engine and are designed to work together for $500 or less, and you will gain performance. I once got a rebuilt rochester Q-Jet carb, from a parts store, but it was expensive, almost $300 as opposed to $210 for a brand new edelbrock one. A local parts store should be able to get rebuilt carbs that will fit right on to the stock manifold, if you can't get a new manifold (chanes are, it will be a rochester quadrajet rebuilt carb that is generic, that's what I got when I needed to get a carb when I first got my car). Either way, look into the "Edelbrock Performer" carburetor, 600 cfm, electric choke, as well as the intake manifold to go with it. Should run under $500 total.


PS. Your car is so old, DO NOT TAKE IT TO A DEALER. They don't know $hit about new camaros, never mind 70s ones. They also won't carry parts for a 70s car..........ex. the carb.

 

I agree. Get yourself an Edelbrock performer intake and an Edlebrock 600cfm electric choke carb. If you don't think you can install it yourself it shouldn't be to hard to find someone to install it for you 'on the side'.

 

Check out summit cataloge. They have intake/carb combos for that range. I had a holly carb and edelbrock intake on my 77 when I had it.
