Can you turn a 327 Block into a 383

I know this is a odd question I have an extra 327 Large journal block hangin around and thought I might see what my possibilities are. Also if its not possible to go 383 is a 350 possible?

Dont see why not. The 327 shared the same bore as the 302 and 350, they all just had different strokes. But if you had an honest to goodness 327, why would you stroke that motor as rare as they are? Just get a 350 block and work it.

If it is a large journal block, you can do anything to it that you can do to a 350 LJ block (67 350s were small journal). Because it's the same block a lot of times. For example, the common 010 block could be used by the factory to make a 302, 327, or 350. So nothing unique about a 327 010 block, other than the stamped engine code that says it came out of the factory as a 327. Check your casting # on mortec.com to make sure it's a LJ before you start ordering parts.

There's a small journal 350? hmmm....

If its a 4 bolt 4 inch bore block you can be sure its a large journal, if it happens to be a 4 bolt.

Actually no. 67 350 crank is LJ, but it has lighter counterweights so it requires a different balance than later 350 cranks. Memory fade moment.

A 327 is a 350 block, with a 283 crank in it. not much needs to be done to stroke it, but you would be better off with a 302.

Re: Can you turn a 327 Block into a 383

A small journal 327 block is a 327 block. There were no other 4" bore engines then. The SJ blocks have less room inside the crankcase for stoke and rod clearance. Early 302's - 67 and most 68 "MO" 302's were small journal. Late 68 and all 69 302's (DZ) were large journal as well as the 327's of the time. These blocks have more crankcase room for larger strokes. Take it from a person who built and has a for real 302 because I just had to build one, that there is no horsepower advantage there. A 327 makes for good all around performance engine, but I just wouldn't consider anything smaller than a 350 for serious street/strip use. There just isn't any point in working harder to achieve less.

Re: Can you turn a 327 Block into a 383

A 283 has a 3.00" stroke with a 3.875" bore.
A 302 has a 3.00" stroke with a 4.000" bore.
A 305 has a 3.48" stroke with a 3.775" bore.
A 307 has a 3.25" stroke with a 3.875" bore.
A 327 has a 3.25" stroke with a 4.000" bore.
A 350 has a 3.48" stroke with a 4.000" bore.
A 383 has a 3.75" stroke with a 4.030" bore.
A 400 has a 3.75" stroke with a 4.125" bore.

A 327 is NOT a 350 with a 283 crank ! That would be a 302 !

The Chevy 327 was destroked to produce the 302, and stroked to make the 350, how did they do that??

All three had different crankshafts, creating three different strokes. Also, the location of the piston pin was different so you can not interchange pistons. I believe the connecting rod lengths were all 5.7" though.

Speed-o-motive offers a small journal 327 to 383 kit.

Cool Re: Can you turn a 327 Block into a 383

um..... No. a 307 is a 3.250 stroke, but the bore is only 3.875". Not the same as a 350's bore of 4.00"
