Cam Choices..
Im not to expecienced in picking cams. what do you guys think would be a good cam for my combo. currently i have:
400 SBC bored .060 over. World product S/R Torquer heads (2.02/1.60 valves) Edelbrock performer RPM intake, 750CFM vacuum secondary Holley, Also going to be spraying a 125 Shot of nitrous as well..Havent bought a Stall converter yet as i will after i choose a good cam.
I have a built TH350 trans, long tube headers and 3:27 posi gear out back
This still needs to be a street car as that is where it will get most of its use with going to the track 5 or so times a year. What are your opinions??

Re: Cam Choices..
Are you wanting to with a roller setup or flat tappet? I'll guess flat tappet..
i have always had good luck with comp products. A 292 Magnum cam would be a good compromise between power and driveability. But there are lots of other choices...

Re: Cam Choices..
IMO the 292 magnum is too big for 3.27s. The heads would also hold back the full potential of that size cam. If you want to use that cam, go with better flowing heads and a deeper gear. But you listed 3.27s, so that means you have the 9 bolt in your 88... not cheap to swap gears.
I run a 224* cam in my 406 w/th350 and 3.42s, same basic setup as yours with ported 441 heads/stock converter. It makes great torque from off idle to 5,500. I just have to tap the throttle to make the 295-50-15s spin. I know I'm giving up hp above 5,000 with the small cam/heads, but I only take it to the track occasionally, the rest of the time it's a fun to drive street car.
Big cams make for high rpm hp, impressive track times with the right combination, especially gears. Smaller cams make good low/midrange torque, which is a lot more fun on the street and can still run respectable times at the track. You will actually be slower at the track with a mismatched big cam car than a well matched smaller cam car.

The cam that is currently in the car is a VERY mild cam. While its tore apart getting new rings and pistons im upgrading the cam as well. Im shooting for some low 12's on motor and somewhere in the 11's on spray. shouldnt be to hard as the car how it sat was an easy 12's car after i fixed all the little problems

hi, I didn't know you wanted to keep a stock converter in it. The 292 is not that big especially in a 412 ci , you would be shifting right at 6100rpm with your combo. the tourqer heads acually flow similar to the 441's. it would be the compression i would be concerned with(58cc chambers) unless you have dished pistons.I personally ran the 284 xtreem energy cam in an 89 silverado with a 400 with 993 casting heads. i used a 2000 rpm stall in a 350t trans. It had 3.42 gears with 29 " tall tires. With this set up I had very good drivability. Just thinking a much lighter car with slightly more stall, would make nice street strip car

Re: Cam Choices..
I ran the ex284 in my 81 in a 327 76cc heads with just a 600 wouldnt idle in gear without 3500 stall worked well at te track ran a 13.2 no nos
with worn out valve guides in my stock smoger heads 624s
with a 342 gear and a th350 I like the cam but going to go to 64 cc heads
pistons are a .240 dome top and im thinking a 750 cfm carb serp belt
conversion with electric fans
