Building a 307

Anybody here ever done it or know anyone that has? I was thinking about it and just wanted to know if you guys knew anything about it. I think it might be cool to have something other than a 350 running around.

I appluase the trying to be different, but I think you may be dissapointed. While the 307 isn't the worst Chevy engine, it doesnt have lots of potential. The reason so many people have 350's is because they work.

But to stay on teh track of being different, look in a 400 small block, or stroking a 350. Both will get you tons of torque and have amazing potential.

Plus I dont believe a high performace model of the 307 was ever made. All two-bolt mains. That doesnt make a big differnece in many motors but if you want to build a small displacement motor like that its ussually to spin hi RPMS.

One would think any Chevrolet V8 would be an excellent choice to build, however the 307 would be the poor choice. That motor was designed as a dependable grocery-getter. I've read several articles over the years and it seems this motor does not respond well to performance.

What ever your choice...good luck.

Don't waste your time or money. It's one of the worst small blocks Chevrolet ever made. Plus, 350 Chevy engines and parts are so affordable, it would cost you twice as much to build up the 307 as it would a 350 and you still wouldn't be making any power. If you want to try something different, I think stuffing one of the new straight 6 engines from the Trailblazer into an old Camaro would make a great sleeper. I think they're rated at 275hp with no mods, so with a little help they should be able to make 300+ pretty easy.

I hate to make it unanimous, but they're all right. The 307 is a gutless motor with no performance potential whatsoever. It even has far less potential than a 2-bolt 283 or 327.

If you want cool and different, try one of those... or.... slap a 283 crank in a 327 and build yourself a 302.

Oh I know a 350 would be easier and cheaper to build I was just browsing possibilities. I thought it would be interesting to mess around with a 307 but considering the 115 HP I have stock it wouldn't be worth dumping the money into. Just like you guys said. Thanks for the replies.

Oh...how much money do you think I could get for that motor? would it be worth a trade to a junkyard for a 350 you think?

If money is an issue, you can always go with a rebuilt 350 and use the 307 as a core. Most places won't care as long as its an sbc, but check in advance.

Well, since I'm going to be a freshman in college money WILL be an issue. I'll have a decent job and I'm willing to get a loan just not a huge one. All I really want to do right now is get a rebuilt 350 in there just to get some more power then I can do heads and cam etc. as I please. Maybe I can find one .30 over.

What's the point in building up a 307? What a waste of time.
