Recomend a STRONG tranny?

I want to know what kinda of tranny I should use for a hot rodded 454.(keep in mind all this is currently in a dream process) I am looking for an aluminum 4/5 speed tranny that can take up to 800ish HP but will probly be using 650/700hp til I complete the dream.
oh btw I plan on this being a street car to go on road trips and cruise with.

edit: Any of you rodders know a good site for old muscle cars with a message board as active as this?

thx

If you want a tranny that will take that kind of power, but still be "driveable" (for road trips, etc.) you're going to have to spend some money. I'd say a well built TH400 with a Gear Vendor's over-drive unit would be the best?! I'm not too sure what other companies build racing trannies that offer overdrive? but that's probably what I'd do.

I second the TH400. They are strong as dirt and fairly cheap to build.

Lenco. Or if youre feeling REALLY spendy, go for a sequintial 6spd from a road racer. Lencos start at what? $5000? Sequintials start at around $10,000 i think. A good 5 speed is the tremec 3550 but they are only rated to 540ft/lbs. It will take 1000hp for a while though.

Th400. I had one bolted up to a 454, 550hp motor. no problem.

That M4 is going to hurt. Of course, it always depends on your driving style. Is the car going to run on slicks and make frequent track visits? If yes, then you might want to build another TH400...

A tremec T-56 from D&D that are upgraded to Viper specs are supposed to be pretty strong. They also are setup so they can be setup for a four speed bellhousing and don't need all the stuff from a "parts car". I think Car craft or Chey high per or one of the mags did a article on it about two months ago. In any case for a manual it all together will run about 4 grand to slap it to the motor and have it read to roll. In any case give them a call, and good luck.

I went through a similar decision process. I'm only looking running a real healthy small block. It is just much cheaper to build an auto to handle a ton of torque. I'm going with a switch pitch TH400. Stall is 4000/1200. Hopefully add a GV when I hit the lottery.

Thanks.
I think I remember someone having a few th400's for sale but they needed to be rebuilt(I dont remember how much he was asking..). how much should I be expected to pay for one that needs to be rebuilt? How much would it cost to have it rebuilt?
and What the 700-r4's about?

thanks

you didn't mention if you preferred auto or manual. based on 4/5 speed, i am assuming a manual. i am currently running an M22 behind my 700HP procharged 69Z, but it isn't going to make it long. tremec's are ok, but wont hold to the power levels we are running. honestly, i will probably invest in a Jerico 4 speed or maybe a G-Force 4 or 5 speed. These can be purchased used for about 2k and new for about 3k , but they are rated for 1000-1200Hp of punishment. they were used in NMRA and pro cars, but they make a standard H pattern shifter version that is clutch assisted (as opposed to a clutchless shifting manual they also offer for drag racing). they are extremely durable. probably my choice when this one lets go.

later,

mike
