Brake Fluid

Hi all, I was wondering if any one would have any advice regarding Brake Fluid to use in the 68 Camaro I am rebuilding.

After looking at different tips and links around the place A few people warned against using any Brake Fluid that had Silicon in it, but no one mentioned why.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I believe something is the chemical makeup of it seems to create air in the line. I think the only ADVANTAGE to silicon is that it won't damage paint. If the air thing is correct then you could ruin a lot more than paint with silicon brake fluid. Good old basic Dot 3 or 4 is great.

Yeah, brake fluid is brake fluid on those old braking systems. I think I'm running some "Road & Track" DOT 3. If you've got the good ol' trusty 4-way drum setup, you're going to have brake fade no matter what

Actually there's no real disadvantage to running a DOT 5 (silicon) set up. It's just that most people drain out their old DOT 3/4 fluid and pour in the DOT 5 and then drive off. Bad idea. DOT 3/4 and DOT 5 DO NOT MIX! You have to VERY thoroughly flush your system with the DOT 5 stuff before you bleed it and drive off. You also have to make absolutely certain there is no water vapor in your lines. So it's really up to you.

DOT 5 also does not absorb water. Thats the reason so many old cylinders are frozen or broken, DOT 3/4 is a water magnet. If your not gonna use the car a bunch (ie. only for cruise nights etc) then DOT 5 is the ticket. I have been using if for a while and have no complaints.
