?best stock sb heads and intake

curious for a local division of racing,

in your opinion whats the best stock unmodified heads and intake for the quadrajet.

i have to run stock cast iron heads that were available on a production vehicle, from the 80s or older, and all i can do is a valve job, nothing else. i was thinking maybe the 350 tpi heads?

same for the intake... with all the stock gm intakes for the 4bbl what ones are the best. i was thinking it may be the 80s aluminum versions, but i dont really know.

im either running a stock(ish) 350 or 400 small block if it helps

thanks for your opinions,
Nick J

I know several longtime NHRA stocker racers and I can tell you that things are nowhere near what they claim to be. If you are adamant about leaving the heads alone I would say go with the double hump, aka fuelie heads. If you doubt there will be a engine inspection teardown I'd go with the 202 heads as they work well with a mild cleanup and some exhaust work. The cast iron quad intake looks rough but will flow more than the aluminum from the start. If you really want to be sneaky send it of to be acid dipped and extrude honed.

Re: ?best stock sb heads and intake

Qjet intake for a set of 87-up "centerbolt" 350 heads can be had by ordering one for an 87 F-body (Camaro) or G-body (Monte SS) with the 305 & carb. I believe all these intakes were cast iron but something in the back of my mind tells me there were some aluminum ones running around. 87-up heads have the 2 center intake bolts "stood up" at a different angle than the 4 on the ends.

For 86-down heads (perimeter bolt valve covers) cast iron Qjet intakes are a dime a dozen at swap meets. QJet Intake off a 77-80 350 (truck or passenger car) would be pretty typical. I don't beleive there was ever a factyory "high performance" QJet intake for the SBC but there were definitely some cast in aluminum. I have one off an 85 Z-28 in my garage. I've heard of many early 80s f-bodys coming with aluminum intakes from the factory (for weight savings, not that they flow any better).

Any stock QJet intake can be helped out with a 1" spacer available many places. Whether 4-hole or open you should try them both out and see what works for your engine, unless they are against the rules.

ok so whats second to the camelbacks? just curious because people who have them think they are sitting on gold, and most are in rough shape. and as we all know they are prone to cracking.

but your saying all intakes for the quadrajet are identical in flow characteristics?

I thought vortec heads didn't go into production until '94? That wouldn't be allowed according to his rules. Although i recently read "build big inch chevy small blocks" - lots of good info in that book - authors there agree vortec heads are the best. But the small blocks in trucks and vans i know didn't get them until MY '95.

Swap ya my 2.02 Fuelies for a 396 or 427 bottom end

I'm not saying that all factory QJet intakes flow identically. There are probably some subtle differences, but I can't think of a single one that is a "stand out" great performance intake. They're all pretty much low profile, small cross-section runner intakes. You'd have to get with someone who builds engines for this kinda racing to get more specific information on a part number-by-part number basis.

Re: ?best stock sb heads and intake

you can get a set of new double hump heads from summit depending on how much people want for thier heads, and even if the vortec heads were built in the 80s and the tpi heads all require special intakes

Re: ?best stock sb heads and intake

i dont get what youre saying, the tpi heads use the same intake as the rest of them. 87 and up require opening of the center holes but thats it?

Re: ?best stock sb heads and intake

new rules just announced camelbacks are not permitted, so whats second to those that can bolt to a standard qjet intake?

Re: ?best stock sb heads and intake

the tpi heads use a different style intake than a standard sbc that is in part why a lt1 intake can be used on a tpi motor but not a standard sbc

who told you this? i have had a 305 tpi engine with a stock qjet intake bolted on it before. there is no difference between a tpi head and tbi head of the same year as far as intake mounting. also there is no difference between a tpi head and a carb head of the same year as far as intake mounting. im not sure if you misread something or what. the lt1 intake bolts on neither of them without some modifications.
