I checked out the stock radio location today, and I dont think Im gonna be able to put a good quality CD player in ther without screwing up the dash, it looks like its not tall enough on the corners, has anyone put one in a 68, if so did it fit in the stock location, and if not where did you put it. I thought about putting one in a console, wher the guages normaly go. ( I dont have a console, so I would have to get one) but I definetly want it to look finished, and not half assed (like mounted under the dash)

also if anone has put speakers in the doors or kick panels any info on that woudl be appreciated.

depending on what you want to do with the car... some ppl like the stock looking car...

if so i recommend looking into getting XFM with the remote station... High Quality Digital Radio well keeping your stock look...

 

I dont mind it not looking stock, but I definetly dont want it to look like it a hole was chopped with a hacksaw and a radio thrown in.

I have considered a **** type radio with CD changer control, just to make things easy...

 

when I got mine the dash had already been chopped up...

So I ended up putting in pioneer head unit and then made an new radio a/c delete panel....

 

I have a Kenwood cd player in mine. Screw that two **** stuff. The car came with speakers in the kick panel's..........crappy 4 x 6's.......even with good one there it doesn't sound to good. I have decent 6 x 9 's in the back. Still sounds like all treble and mids..........no bass I have a 4 channel amp 100 watts rms............now I need a kicker and another amp to get some decent sound out of it.

 

JY211, how did they do it? just hacked up the stock location?

do you happen to have pic online?

does the console look wide enough to fit a radio where the guages would go?

the 69 looks like it would be easier, isnt the radio in that just to the right of the steering column, on the plastic molding for the instrument cluster?

 

yeah they hacked up the stock radio location. With the new panel, we just made the slot for the radio that we wanted to use....I don't have any pictures of it, but I'll see if I can snap some for you...

My guages are also in the new panel....

 

I put the stereo in the stock location on my 69 camaro, had to cut the dash a little and make a plate to hold it and make it look clean but it came out looking nice. Also we cut holes to put the 5 inch speakers in the kick panels (also looks pretty nice) and put 6x9's in the rear window with a little bit of modification to the rear deck. Lots more stereo coming my way in the future but i'm probably making an overhead consol for my 69 and that will hold all the xm radio stuff i plan on putting in my car.

thanks for the help guys. I know the 69 is different than the 68, as far as radio location, but the kick panels should be the same. did the speakers in the kick panels go in easily, or did you have to cut out anything behind the panel?

I belive there are already holes cut for 6x9's on the rear shelf, though Ill have to cut some braces out of them.

 

Yea the bracing is what i had to modify on the rear deck not a bid deal at all. Check the depth of the speaker to make sure it will fit but my pioneers fit in just fine in the kickpanel.

No. The stock am/fm really sucks for sound. I first used a Custom Autosound Kenwood converted deck over 10 years ago. When I saw my old RS on eBay last September, it still had the same deck in it. How's that for quality?

They have decks now with built in CD controllers. You can even get one that appears to have a stock AM face. Then when you turn it on, there display becomes a backlit LCD and you see the AM/FM/CD controls. Looks totally stock to the casual passerby. They come with optional CD changers you can mount in the glovebox, trunk or under the seat. They also make a thing now called hidden audio. It allows you to mount the deck and CD changer almost anywhere out of sight. Then there's a slimlinge controller that you can mount anywhere, like the backside of your visor? Totally trick. They also make custom speakers to fit the stock dash location and kickpanels with built in speakers.

Quite honestly the best stereo solutions out there for you classic car if you don't want your dash cut up.
