Question AFR 227's for SBC 408?

I am looking at these heads for my short block 408. I am wondering if they are too large (intake port size) and if they can be safely milled from 76cc to ~71-72 cc chamber size? From the specs page, every 0.006 milled is 1 cc, so 0.024-0.030 in. will have to come off to achieve the desired chamber size. I am assuming they can be.

The motor is N/A, cam is 245/261 @0.050 and lift is 0.6/0.62. Targeted C/R is 11:1. Manual tranny car.

AFR's webpage says these heads are for the rpm range 5500 and up.? Does that mean the engine will be dead below that and throttle response suffer? I would like to drive this car on the street some.

Also the valve seat size is stated as 2.285 and 1.696. Is that the size of the required valves or total seat OD?

wow..that seems like too much head for your engine (no pun intended). Why dont you try AFR's 220cc race heads?

they wouldn't be too big, and those seat sizes you listed are the overall seat od, I think they are setup for 2.08/1.6 valves. I would look into a bigger cam for that size motor, I am running a 264/272 .050, .630/.640 in the 383 I am building, with Dart Pro1 235 cc heads, but it is also a "naawwwss" motor...

Question

The guy is selling them for $650 shipped.

They are bare and have had the chambers polished and minor porting, but the porting is incomplete. Only one head has been ported.

They have never been installed.

Does that sound like an OK deal?

DOH! I missed the "seat" part of it..lol.. 2.08's would be a-ok with your setup. $650 sounds like a good deal!

I thought 227s needed offset rockers ... but i guess not..

It does say they they have non standard valve spacing.
