ALL of the weight is because of federaly mandated safety standards..( read bumpers and crash bars ) all of which can be removed and replaced with replicas or eliminated alltogether but anything to remove weight is going to cost something in the form of crashworthyness or creature comforts ... gutting the interior and sound deadining meterial will take off some weight as will removing heater and air conditioning.. bracing in the doors alone can weigh 70+ LBs but unless your skining your doors are hard to get out ...same with bumpers all the bracing and even the bumpers themselves weigh alot ... I guess it just boils down to what can you do WITHOUT... theres allways more HP to push the weight...
i dunno if that is a USA law or something... but here in canada i know a guy with a 79 that got his car from around there 3700/3800ish to about 2700 and didn't have a problem with safe standards and what not.... considering the whole front end was carbonfiber and tube. carbonfiber doors, trunk lid, plex windows that rolled down, plastic rci seats, mid steel 8point cage... i can't remember what else... but it was mostly frame work that really got him down.... look into getting fiberglass parts... or pulling out anything that u have that don't need..
My 78 Z runs right over 3200 lbs with me in it. Im 225.... so the car is around 3000 lbs.
It has no heater, air, power steering, wipers, or Inner fenders. I have a Glass hood and deck lid with no sound deadiner. Im running to RCI glass seats with no back seat. The back seat area is tinned off and carpeted.
Like he said dropping weight takes away from creature comforts.
Aluminum engine parts help too...... aluminum heads, radiator and intake.
Headers VS manifolds
There are a ton of small things that add up to alot of weight....

hmm, well i need "some" of those since it is my cruise for chicks car... How is it that the 67/72 car's weight is arount 3100 to 3400pounds and 75/77's weigh 3700/4000 pounds?(if that is true that they do infact weigh that much more...)
Am I missing something? Those weight numbers are half accurate right?

Later second gen f-bodies are heavier due mostly to stricter crash safety standards - there's a fair bit more steel, particularly in the bumpers.
Start pulling things you don't need, even little ones. Be aware that removing alot of weight from the front will affect your alignment.
washer fluid container
charcoal canister
everything including the carpet out of the trunk.
remove the strip of rubber at the cowl (and get more cold air too!
)
sound deadener under the carpet
speakers and stereo
convert to electric fan (I think electric is lighter)
aluminum: water pump, intake maifold, heads
remove ac
remove power windows/locks
convert to manual steering/brakes
use the radiator from an 82-92 camaro which fits exactly the same as your stock one ($100 - 120 new, or get a junkyard one - I'm going to be doing this swap soon)
mini-starter
tubular a-arms
aluminum wheels
fibreglass: hood, trunk, fenders
a full tank of gas weighs 100lbs.
