77 camaro question

im about to buy a 77 camaro with a 305 in it next week. good deal the guy only wants 300 bucks for it cause im good friends with his nephew. im gonna use the car for an autocross car. my question is, is the 305 motor a good motor to stick with or go with something else? i notice alot of the guys with older camaros that road course race like the smaller cube motors, like 302 and 305. how close in common is this motor to the older 302, and what are some good numbers could i expect out of it? also would the cross ram intake that they used on the 302 motor work on this 305??

305s are boat anchors, and I don't think there's any weight savings advantage. Get a 350 because they are so cheap, and if you really want to spend lots of $, get an aluminum block to save weight. Or get aluminum heads and intake.......I don't think you will even find a chevy 302 around, and if you do, expect to pay for it. If you're on a low budget you can make a decent 350 because it's just so cheap to build. Get some GM vortec heads and match it with a Comp Cams extreme energy cam, somewhere around 268-274 grind.........depends on the gearing and compression you have and other things....If it's an auto X car think suspension first as long as the car runs.......

My first car was a 77 maro w/305. It was a total dog. definatly go with the 350 if you are looking for cheap .
