'73 camaro neutral safety switch

i posted this in the drivetrain forum, because this said engine only, but i see plenty of non engine info in here so will post here as well.

This post is for my dad, we are restoring a 73 camaro and he needs a neutral safety switch for it, we have been scouring junk yards, and i've been on ebay. From what he said he might need to get the whole pedal assembly? im not too familiar with that part of the car just trying to take advantage of technology to help him out, any sites? other models we can look on for that pedal assembly? thanks for anything

Re: '73 camaro neutral safety switch

Is the car auto or standard?

An automatic requires the "neutral safety switch", and is built into the shifter (has nothing to do with the pedals).

A standard requires a switch that is operated by the clutch pedal when you push the clutch.

In either case, you just need the safety switch..............don't know why you'd need a pedal assembly!? (unless you're doing an auto-->standard swap ).

Re: '73 camaro neutral safety switch

the car is originally auto converted to a 4 speed he got the pedal assembly but it does not have a working neutral safety switch, and as far as his knowledge goes they have not reproduced one that works, and i was trying to find out if there is a way he can get a new one, and if not what other vehicles he may look on

sorry for the confusion

Re: '73 camaro neutral safety switch

Okay, that makes sense.

Basically, all you need is a switch that makes contact when you push the clutch pedal to the floor. It's the same type of switch (I think? ) as what activates your brake lights when you push the brake pedal.

I would *think* that you could just order a replacement switch from a GM dealership? It doesn't have to be year-specific for 1973. FWIW, a lot of the parts we have in/on my Dad's '73 came off my old '80/'81 parts cars!

When mine went bad in my '71 Nova, I just straight wired it. Worked like a charm. Of course I could start the car while it was in drive. (strong little starter I tell ya)
