700R4 in a 2nd gen

Has anyone ever put a 700R4 or a 200R4 in a 2nd gen pontiac? Ive got a 78 TA with a pontiac 400 and turbo 350 that i want to make into a highway car. Im wondering if its possible and what would have to be done. I know the bolt pattern is different so is there someone that makes an adapter for it? would i need a different size drive shaft? thanks in advance

Yah, a 200R4 will bolt right in man, and they already have BOP bolt patterns. It's also the same length as your TH350 so the drive shaft is the same. The only problem is you'll have to move the cross member and redrill.

yes, pretty much a bolt in job and since you have flexability in the crossmember you can move it easily.also your shifter???your stock one dont have a 4th gear position remember?i dont know too many options to fix that but i think bm makes the megashifter for a 2ndgen to work with the 4 speeds.
not sure though,im a 3rd gen guy.
also look around for a tranny, dont get a 200r4,they not any worse, but theres not too many parts for them.if you go with the 70,try to get an 88 and up if its hasnt been modifird yet.the newer trans have better upgrades for builds, save a few bucks.you can upgrade an older one but it will cost u more.

the 78 is a 200 hp 2.56 rear end car, its not going to have much more power added to it, i want gas mileage out of it so im not worried about it being strong.

There's actually a decent amount of parts available to build up strong 2004R's, they came stock in Grand Nationals and T-types

I buddy of mine is currently getting his 2004R built to handle 900hp and tossing it into his '76 Camaro. He figures that will be more than enough to withstand what he's gonna throw at it.

Re: 700R4 in a 2nd gen

tru theres enough 200 parts to buld on but finding a guy to do it right is hard.most only know the 700..actually id prefer a 200.it has a a tad lower first gear(numerically) and a tad higher overdrive.so you get the best, wicked launches in first, the 700 can be kinda high for some cars ,and a lower overdrive kicking your higway rpms down that much more.and since the first gear is lower the drop to second isnt as much, keeping car in the power range more..
