500-550 HP out of a 383
500-550 HP out of a 383
My dad and I are about ready to start a build up on a 350 4 bolt main we have sitting in our back garage. We really don't know what we are going to put it in since we don't have a car that it will fit in, but we will worry about that later.
Does anyone know anything about the Trickflow kits they offer in Summit??? Their largest kit advertises 500 HP and 450 ftlbs but I know thats most likely FWHP and not RWHP. They seem like good kits for the price and I will probably con my dad into putting a dual stage on it too. No matter what car we get it will be completely stripped with no interior and no comforts. It is going to be an all out drag car with a cage and a tubbed rear.
Should I look into the Trickflow kits or piece together my own???

horsepower dosent come in a kit. If you want the max power out of your engine you need to know all the secrets of engine building and believe me there are thousands. I know engine builders who can make over 500 horsepower in a junkyard engine using almost all stock parts. I'm starting to learn the secrets now and its ****ing unbeleiveable.

well, run the calculations and make sure your FORGED pistons you put in there are going to give you a good 8-8.5 dynamic compression ratio if you plan on running pump gas, if not, then make sure you don't over shoot your desired octane rating...
you said it's a 4 bolt main, get it line bored at the least and you may consider putting some new main caps in there, something built for that kind of power, also make sure you get something like an Eagle4340 forged crankshaft, anything cast is not going to hold over 500 bhp, oh yea (FWHP is front wheel horsepower, something that new cars have, old musclecars and trucks etc. are rated in BHP at the engine and RWHP, Brake Horsepower, either at the engine or at the rear wheels, stage 2 rods or H beam rods are a must, look at some pretty good clevitte 77 bearings and an oil pump....
NOW you can think about your 500 some hp kit, Trickflow makes good heads, edelbrock is pretty good all around, but i've never tried any of their stuff, but the kit seperated will run you $1400 for the heads, $150 is a good bet on a cam, $400 for the double pumper, and $200 for that big vic jr so the kit is cheaper by far, if those are the parts you want...
but note, your entire driveline will need to be beefed to support it. or it's gonna hurt when you start grenading weak links, just be advised, if you build that motor, it won't be fun on the street, your intake and cam will have you running atleast 3500-4000 rpms at all times, and you'll have an extra probably $2000 in the motor above the kit, and your transmission and driveshaft, rearend, axles, gears, automatic tranny? 4500 stall converter.... and your engine is going to spin atleast 7000rpms by the looks of that powerband.
The kit itself looks good, but just know what you're stepping into

well it is going to be a race car. not a street car. My dad says he wants to be able to take it out an cruise it every once and a while but i dont know if that will work. I think we may have found a 71 camaro that a guy wants to get rid of cheap so that may be what the motor will go in. Its going to be a TH400 and a 12 bolt rear (we have those already).
Re: 500-550 HP out of a 383
cool, then..... do it, and post some 1/4 mile times : )
yea, like i said i've never used one of those kits myself but i do have a holley carb (holley is in my humble opinion best carbs), trickflow is as good as anyone with heads, and an intake is an intake, nothing really happening there, unless it's a big air gap er something they pretty much all perform the same, the cam looks good, but is cheap enough to replace anyway, so i think you're good to go

just got done talking to the guy with the camaro, he doesn't want to sell it after all. DAMMIT!!!! My dad found a 80 Malibu that he can pick up for about 600 bucks with no engine or tranny. I think they are butt ugly but for a car that is going to be stripped down with nothing else in it I guess it will work. I am supposed to go look at it today.
