4th gen rear brakes onto 67 and up???

A fellow at my office told me that it is posible to bolt the rear disc brakes from my wrecked 97 Camaro SS onto the rear axle of a 67 and up Camaro. IS this true- anyone have any info????

I have a set off a 97 I am planning to install on my 70. I looked at putting them on my 86 Monte Carlo, and they would NOT bolt on without some mods and fabbing. I'll know more next month after I get back home and look at stuff..

A better bet would be a set off a 3rd gen, since they had the drum brakes on some models... GM likes to keep thing simple..

Bolted right up to my 69! Had to fab a tab for the e cable. Use the new cable not the old one. go right through the frame holes. I also used the brake lines from the T out. Just snuck it a loop de loop since its longer. didn't change anything else. Really added some stopping power.

I would assume if you take the axles out and if you have a ten bolt that the brackets from the 4th gen cars will bolt up.

the brakes from 98 and up 4th gens are much better than 93-97. The rear has a better e-brake system and the caliper is in the correct location. the front brakes are overall better.

Greg Nolte: Can you do a write-up or did you take pictures of your setup? I'd love to see how you did it or at least a how-to. Thanks

How easy would it be for me to do this swap on my '67?? I plan to go to a 12 bolt or a 8.5 " 10 bolt with 3.73s pretty soon, and Im looking for some cost effective disks, Im probly gonna go with the master power brakes set up for the front, and Id liek to see if some 4th gen brakes would fit the rear.

Me too 67 LS-1. I'd love some hard info on this. If anyone could scan a 98-02 Chilton's manual for the rear discs or anything so we could actually compare them.

I don't own a Camaro but the rear end setup on my Nova is the same. Just did my front brakes and I'd love to be able to swap to rear discs instead of redo'ing the rear drums when it comes time.

It is possible to put rear discs on our cars with parts from a late 70s RWD Eldorado [I think that's the right one] but I'd much rather have LS1 brakes.

Just the stock rotors and repacked the bearings with the best grade bearing grease I could find. I was hoping to be able to get some EBC green stuff pads but my brakes were squealing pretty bad so I re-did the brakes before calling rather then driving on bad brakes. It's probably good that I did it then anyway, one of my rotors had some big gouges in it and was too small to be turned but the other one passed muster.

I'm hoping to auto-x the car next summer if I can scrape the money together for some SFCs and a rear sway bar. That and a new set of wheels, I'm thinking some 16x8 IROCs for a cheap way to get 16s. Either that or break the bank and go with some 17x9.5 2002 SS wheels, but those are still so expensive I don't know if I can afford it.

Ah, the well laid plans of what to spend my disposable income on. Who needs to eat? Not me!

If anyone has a 12 bolt sitting around or any rear end that they plan to put the disk brakes on i will let you know if 4th gen brakes will bolt up but i need someone to measure the distance between the four holes that the brake backing plate mounts to.

If i remember i believe the distance between all of them is not equal it is a slight rectangle and not a square but i could be wrong.

If someone measures an old school one i will measure a fourth gen bracket.

There is also other factors that will come into play besides just being able to mount the rear brake setup. You need to also find out the distance from the end of the axle tube to the inner edge of the axle itself. If the distances are different compared to how they are on a fourth gen you will have to shim either the bracket mounting point, the rotor, or the caliper mounting point so that the rotor will sit centered between the calipers pads. If not you will have it sit to a side and constantly run on the rotor and it will eat pads fast.

It should not be that hard to make happen. Someone just needs to get both rear ends side by side and see if it is a go. I have a 9" and a 4th gen rear brake setup but my rear is meant for a 4th gen.
