Re: 327 vs 350

Mod for Mod a 350 is better it will make more power. But I own a 327 with a Holley Stealth Ram EFI intake and a hyd tappet cam and its a beast! It will lay waste to my Lt1 firebird and it sounds sweet when I rev it! I will upgrade it to a roller cam one day but I'm having a lot of fun with just the tappet cam,

Re: 327 vs 350

I've seen a similary modded 327 and 350 run right with each other. These were two friends cars. The 327 was in a vert so it actually had more weight. The 327 also has a better stroke to connecting rod ratio than a 350. If you don't think that matters, see what a 350 w/6.0 rods will do compared to stock.

Re: 327 vs 350

mod for mod a 350 will make more power more torque at a lower more reliable rpm than a 327 everytime. a 350 with 6.0 rods or 5.7 rods isn't going to make that much difference in power realistically. I've seen back to back builds with it showing 2% or less. On a 400 hp motor that's 8hp not really worth the added expense at all.

i guess we should be using 302's instead of 383's then, huh? a 302 has a FAR better stroke to con rod ratio.
it's been known since about 1968 that a 350 will make more power with the same parts as a 327 and do it at a slightly lower rpm. that's why the 327 was discontinued and the 350 became the best all-around engine EVER PRODUCED.

Re: 327 vs 350

One of the best times of my life was when a friend of mine an I would go head to head every weekend with our Camaros on the street.

His car was a '67 Camaro with an 11:1 327, TeamG, big Crane solid, Nash 5 speed and a 4.10 gear. He shifted at 8000.

Mine was a '69 Camaro with a real '492 headed LT1, old Victor manifold, off road 302 cam and a Liberty prepped T10. I had a 5.14 gear, 29" tires and shifted at 72-7300.

We would run doorhandle to doorhandle all the while banging gears. His Nash had an extra one but my deep rear had about the same 1st gear ratio. My car would thunder in high gear an usually pull him just a little while he was banging fifth.

Both of us were probably making in the neighboorhood of 430-450 hp at our best. 112-113 mph in the 1/4. The gear was everything really for both of us. The point is that the 327 is going to have to turn more rpm to equal the performance of a similarly prepped 350. Its all about what you own and what your expectations and goals are.

Sorry if this post doesn't seem relevant.

No, all small journal 327's are 2 bolt. Some large journal 327's are 4 bolt and the vast majority of 350's are 2 bolt.

How do you know if you have a large or small journal 327? Mine has a forged stock crank and rods, but its not a 4 bolt ---

There has never been a 4 bolt main 327 built . . . NEVER. Not from the factory anyway. 1968 and up were large journal engines and all earlier engines were small journal engines.

Most 350s are 2 bolt blocks. . . not 4 bolt. Trucks typically came with the 4 bolt mains. Cars (except High HP motors) were two bolt mains.

wasnt the corvette 327s four bolt mains? i think the 327 is a better engine. but then again from what i hear the 302 would kick a 327s *** and 350 w/out a prob. no replacement for displacement huh, i think i would have to disagree for the most part with small blocks. a 377 will run better than a 383 small block. im talking about non 400 based small blocks.
