327 problem

Hey folks was wondering if someone can help me out? My 327 is not running right, this is a fresh motor and was running great at initial start up,but now it's fouling plugs for some reason. has holly 650 double pumper, bored .30 over with 64cc heads, the car ran great at first but started running rich, pulled the splitfire plugs and most of them were soaked ,so it was not running on all 8,the distributor is an accell dual point with a pertronix electronic conversion.I was wondering since the plugs were set up for a points system if the spark isn't hot enough to fire all the fuel?? was wondering what you guys might use for plugs or any recommendations for a fix?

Regards,
Terry

4 things to consider
the jetting and power valve of the double pumper.
the timing and if you are getting full spark
the camshaft
the intake
more info is needed before anyone can troubleshoot like the type of cam, intake, heads, timing, jet size, power valve size, vacuum at idle, vacuum in drive, header size,

1.94 heads stock with motor but had 3 angle valve job and heads cut to 64cc,HD springs, stock exhust manifolds with stock exhust, Holly Z28 dual plennum intake, crane cam mid range 2500-5500 don't have the spec sheet for duration though, motor was built about 10 yrs ago and things get misplaced, block was decked, line bored, blue printed and .30 over with 4 valve relief trw 10-1 flat top pistons, forged crank,Mildon double roller chain,Crane roller rockers, distributor Accel dual point with Vac advance converted to Pertronix electronic ignition.wires are moroso armor shielded 8mm with split fire plugs.only vaccum connections are the dist and power brake booster.

Like I said car was running great initially, had a bit of carbon build up(Black smoke) and now runs terrible, the 650 double pumper was bolted on with no adjustments and ran great initially, timing was set perfect and car was purring fine, fuel pump pressure is around 7-8 psi according to inline guage.I was guessing either carb adjustment or ignition? was trying to figure out a good AC plug for this car rather than the split fires, not sure the stock ones will work with an HEI set up? AC R43's what AC suggests.Need info on carb adjustment specs.

Thanks,
Terry

If the carb was bolted on with no settings changed then you need to adjust your floats!!! you are flooding because the floats are set too high and need to come down a little.

Also with a cam with that type of powerband I'm guessing your idle vacuum is probobly around 8" or so check it by getting your car warmed up and then drop it in gear and put a vacuum gauge up to your full vacuum line on the holley which is the line in the front of the carb not the one connected to the metering block whatever vacuum you have get a power valve rated 2.5" lower.

That'd be my guess as well. Years ago my buddy had all kinds of promblems with his 650 DP in his '68 with a 327. It seems like he was tuning it weekly until he figured out that floats weren't set right.

One of the main reasons I only run Q-jets on my 1st gen Camaros.

I don't think its the plugs. I used to run "one-colder" on the plugs on my old '68 RS. When I switched from the stock points distributor to a Mallory Unilite I never had an issue with "enough spark." Of course back then I was working for Kragen's so I used to change the plugs about every 6-8 weeks out of habit.

Dang I miss that employee discount.

You probably have trash in one or both of the inlet needles. Very common on a new install, especially with chrome fuel lines, especially the Summit brand. They flake and it gets into the seat of the needle.

To check, fire up engine (or run electric pump for a few seconds if you have one). Shut it off. Then pull the sight plugs on the passenger side of the float bowls. Fuel should just be at the bottom of the holes, dribbling out. If it runs out like a river, you know where the dirt is.

Neat thing about Holleys is that the needle screws right out the top for cleaning. Then give it a shot with carb cleaner and reinstall. About three threads showing with no gasket is a good rough adjust for starting.

I like the float issue too. What temp is you car running? Too low of a thermo or bad thermo won't help. Keep us posted.

Adjusted the floats today and it helped somewhat,Found a short in the armor shielded moroso wires the hard way,so I will be getting a new set of wires and a set of plugs.

Don't buy Splitfires again. Those things are junk, and a complete waste of money. Get some AC Delco's.
