are the 2nd gen good reliable daily drivers?

my sister is in love with the 2nd gen from about the years of 1975 to its close. She's not looking for one thats 15 grand, more like 10,000 and under. This place has some in that price range http://www.premium-motors.com/html/p..._showroom.html Just wondering what kind of problems she might have. Also what kind of performance and gas mileage do these cars have. She lives in LA so obviously if it really sucks the gas, it may not be such a good choice. I know absolutely nothing about these cars so any info will be useful.--Thanks in advance

I wouldn't want a second gen as a daily driver. Sure, it can be done, but I find they're confomfortable and that the fit and finish is poor, and the gas mileage sucks. She'd be better off with something newer and a smaller engine.

I drove my 77 for about 3 years before i got my 94. I only had the 305 so not much power but it got around 15 mpg or so. Of course gas was only $1 a gallon back in 98.

I used mine as a daily driver in high school, and it wasn't too bad. I only got stranded once, and I could have driven it on in then but I thought I'd developed an engine knock. All in all it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Would I suggest that it be done now? Probably not. It was fun, and I would still drive mine daily, but I'd always have a backup plan for when things went wrong. We all know things WILL go wrong too, it's the way of our world.

if you have any mechanical skills, and are realy set on one being a DD, you can get one, and spend about $1500 and do a nice fuel injection conversion. To a Holley Stealth ram or something.

Mine was a daily driver for about 10 years before I got my Tahoe.

It'll take some fixing up to make it reliable and an efficient daily transportation though. I had rewired my car and put in a new 350 engine (very mildly modified) and transmission (a TH700R4). Since I commuted 30 miles to college and back, the overdrive trans really helped out- to the tune of about 21 mpg. I still have the car, but it's a weekend toy now.

I only own a 1970 Camaro. That's it. This has been for three or so years. It has a very mild 350/700r4 and 3.73 gears. I get 20mpg on the highway and it will run high 12s with slicks. I just finnished a 3000mile trip that took me three days. It's plenty comfortable. Anything older than this Camaro would be marginal as a daily driver. The later the year the better the road manners. A stock late '70s Camaro would suit her well.

Also, for more info, go here: http://www.nastyz28.com

Your sis might be happy with that '78 TA if she doesn't mind spending a lot on gas.

Putting in a 700r4 sounds like a great idea, and should bolt up no problem, I'll kick over the idea to her and see what she thinks. I know she complains about her ranger truck having bad gas mileage, so this car doesn't seem like it will work for her, although her truck is pretty bad on gas, doesn't seem to much better than my LT1 6 speed.

I drove a 1980 Z28 350 4-speed as a daily driver for about 2 years back around 1989. It got decent gas mileage and I enjoyed driving the car a lot. The only issue I had was driving a manual transmission in rush hour traffic. That got on my nerves after awhile, but with an auto trans like a 700R4 swap I think a 2nd gen would make a great daily driver.

meh, there's nothing wrong with the 2nd gen being a daily driver...if it's setup properly and it's been taken care of.

With a 30 year old car you're taking chances. It's very rare that you'll find one that hasn't been fooled around with.

One good thing though....the value of the car won't depreciate if she takes care of it.
