1st gen questions

I posted this in the lounge, but didn't get much response. I know these are not tech questions, but here goes anyway.

Did the 1st gen Z/28 come with an automatic or were they all 4sp?

Did they all come with 303 small blocks?

Where they any big block 1st gen Z/28's?

Sorta got a bet with a guy I work with.

I'm saying all 1st gen Z's were 4sp, 302 small blocks. He's thinking some were auto's and maybe even big blocks. I say big block first gen cars were SS's.

Thanks for the help.

You are correct. All Z/28s were 4-spd and all were 302 cid.

FirstGenz, SS's were available with either the 350 small block or the 396 big block.

JG hit the nail on the head, Z's only came with the 302 and a manual transmission. That's because the Z was a road race car, built to compete in the SCCA series. The rules at the time limited displacement to 5,000cc.

Pontiac doesn't have a small block and big block per se; the 350's use the same size block as the 455's, not internally but external dimensions.

HELLO! Re-read the original post and don't post wrong information!

The question was about 1st gen Z/28's.

All 1967-1969 Z/28's were 302 cid small block Chevies with a 4 spd.

Anyone that says otherwise doesn't know what they're saying.

Thank you!

Futhermore, 1st gen SS Camaros came with a 350 cid small block or a 396 cid big block. (This doesn't include the delear prepped Yenkos, Danas, Baldwins, etc.)

Actually its more like...
1967 MO302 non-A.I.R.
1967 MP302 w/ A.I.R. (California)
1968 MO302 w/ or w/o A.I.R.
1969 DZ302 ... etc.

First generation Z/28's also NEVER had air conditioning.

Any other engine besides a 302 CUBIC inch motor (MO 67-68, and DZ 69) are either a fake Z/28 or a replacement engine. CE blocks were considered the offical replacement block if needed.

You can also tell a real Z by bolts that mounted the chambered exhaust originally.

That is correct...

A.I.R. = Air Injection Reactor System... i.e. Smog Pump

In 1967 all Z/28's sold in California had the A.I.R. system (smog pump). They were coded as "MP" blocks. All Z/28's sold outside California had no-smog and were coded "MO" blocks.

In 1968 all Z/28's sold with or without smog pumps were "MO" blocks.

In 1969 all Z/28's got "DZ" blocks.

As you said, Air Conditioning (AC) was never offered on a 1st gen Z/28. (They were built to race afterall.)
