1979 Trans Am

I'm looking at a 1979 Trans Am for a few hundred bucks. The engine runs strong, and the body is good, but it either has a blown clutch or tranny. I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell the difference without actually pulling it apart. Are there any sure fire ways of knowing? Or should i Just look for a diffirent project car?
Thanks guys

Well I an not an expert at this but I can give it a try. I assume you are talking about a manual transmission..... Ask the person if you can try to drive it ..... If it is the clutch it will be very hard to get it into gear and if you do you probably will hear alot of grinding..... If it is a transmission problem it will move into each gear fine but give you weird noises once you engage the clutch. Hope this somewhat helps
